action
At the height of the Cold War, the eccentric chess player Bobby Fischer fears being spied on by the Soviet Union. He remembers his childhood in the late 1940s. His mother, who lived in Moscow for a few years, warns him about spies. Bobby turns to chess and an extraordinary talent quickly shows up. His first chess teacher is Carmine Nigro , the chairman of the Brooklyn Chess Club. Bobby soon competed in professional chess tournaments and became the youngest US champion at the time .
At the 1962 Chess Olympiad in Varna , Bulgaria , Fischer assumes that the Soviet players consult with one another during the games.
On his return to the United States, the patriotic attorney Paul Marshall offers him pro bono support in changing the tournament rules. Fischer agrees and chooses former champion William Lombardy , who had meanwhile become a priest, as the second . This succeeds in calming the eccentric fisherman so that he can win competitions again. He is about to become world chess champion , but then loses an important game against the reigning world champion Boris Spasski .
The US government supports Fischer's goal of the World Cup in order to exploit an American's victory over a representative of the Soviet Union for propaganda purposes. After all, Fischer won the title of World Chess Champion 1972 in Reykjavík in the “ Match of the Century ”. The competition is on the verge of failure several times due to Fischer's failures. After all, after 21 games he emerged as the winner with 12½: 8½.
The epilogue names other stations in Fisher's life: His mental state deteriorated. He retired from tournament chess. In 1980 he was arrested for vagrancy. In 1992 he went to another game against Spassky in Yugoslavia . In doing so, however, he violated the US economic embargo on Yugoslavia, whereupon the US issued an arrest warrant against him. He harbored conspiracy theories against the US and the Jews and traveled the world until Iceland granted him asylum in 2005. He spent the last years of his life in Reykjavík, where he died in 2008.
