Lily Rabe (born June 29, 1982 in New York City ) is an American actress . She became famous for her portrayal of Portia in William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice , for which she received a Tony Awards nomination . She is known to a large audience for her roles in the American Horror Story series.

Childhood and youth

Rabe is the daughter of playwright David Rabe and actress Jill Clayburgh . Her brother Michael is also a playwright and actor, her half-brother Jason, from John Rabe's first marriage, is a musician. Her father is Catholic, her maternal grandfather is Jewish and the maternal grandmother is a Protestant. Rabe grew up in Bedford, New York. When she was in seventh grade, the family moved to Lakeville, Connecticut .

Career

Career start

Rabe studied dance for ten years. She later studied acting at Northwestern University . In 2001 she made her screen debut at the side of her mother in the film Never Again . In 2002 she made her stage debut at the Gloucester Stage Company in Massachusetts , again at the side of her mother . Rabe received a B.Sc. degree in acting in 2004.

After completing her studies, she moved back to New York, where she appeared in other plays. She made her debut on Broadway in 2005.

Rabe starred in the 2007 film Recipe to Fall in Love . In the same year she starred in the play Crimes of the Heart , which was Kathleen Turner's directorial debut . In 2008 she broke a rib at theater rehearsals. She also worked again in TV and film productions.

2010–2012

In 2010 she starred alongside Al Pacino in a theater production of William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice . The production was also performed on Broadway . For her performance, Rabe received a Tony Award nomination . In August 2011, she was cast for the role of Nora Montgomery for the first season of the FX horror series American Horror Story . In the second season of the series she played the role of the nun sister Mary Eunice, which she impersonated in the fourth season . In season three , she played the witch Misty Day, a role that Ryan Murphy wrote for her. In the fifth season she played the serial killer Aileen Wuornos , in the sixth the main role of Shelby Miller and returned in the eighth season in the role of the witch Misty Day . Also in the ninth season she had a guest appearance in the role of Lavinia Richter .

In October 2012, it was announced that she would star in the movie We're Just Married , which was scripted by her father and she was the producer of the film.

Since 2013

In 2013, Rabe played theater in Los Angeles . In the film Pawn Sacrifice - Game of Kings she played Joan Targ , the sister of Bobby Fischer . In 2014 she starred in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing .

Private life

Raven is in a relationship with actor Hamish Linklater . In December 2016 it was announced that the two were expecting their first child together.
