action

According to Vanity Fair, Ben is one of the 30 most powerful film producers in Hollywood . The magazine invites all 30 producers to a joint photo shoot - they should be placed in front of the word "POWER". Ben's position was intended between "O" and "W", but the past two weeks have shaken his reputation. Ben recapitulates.

It was a Monday when he was in the test screening of the film Fiercely , made by the eccentric and pill- addicted director Jeremy Brunell . The film was produced by Ben and has a prominent cast with Sean Penn . Penn is shot dead in the finale, but the audience is furious and horrified when his dog is also shot shortly before Penn is murdered. So the ending has to be changed, Jeremy stands up and Ben has to convince him, otherwise the film won't premiere at the Cannes Film Festival almost 14 days later as planned . Studio boss Lou Tarnow is convinced that the film will be a flop even with a new ending, but does not want to lose more millions than necessary.

However, Ben has very different problems than a bitchy director. For a second project, he was able to hire Bruce Willis , who in his opinion was overpaid by the studio with $ 20 million, but could at least attract numerous women to the cinema as a heartthrob. Too bad Bruce Willis has grown and gained a full beard for the past six months. When Ben indicated on Tuesday that Willis had to take off his beard, he had a fit of rage, a little later fired his agent Dick Bell, who already had stomach cramps anyway , and threatened to abandon the project. The film studio is also stubborn: If Bruce Willis does not remove his beard by Friday, the film will not be shot.

Ben also has worries privately. His second wife Kelly is currently in divorce and sees him regularly at the separation counselor, even if both still have feelings for each other. Zoe, the 17-year-old daughter from his first marriage, suffers from the suicide of a producer and Ben only finds out at his memorial service that both were dating. He also finds out that Kelly is now sleeping with screenwriter Scott Solomon.

Together with the filming team, Ben succeeds in getting Bruce Willis to shave so that filming can begin on time on Friday. Ben also manages to convince Jeremy Brunell to re-cut the ending of Fiercely . The dog is not shot in the film, but instead joins the dying Sean Penn to comfort him. The film is accepted by the studio boss Lou Tarnow and will have its world premiere in Cannes. After Jeremy berated those responsible in Hollywood in front of the assembled audience, the film runs - with the original ending and the dog that was shot. The audience is horrified and at the end boos the director and producer. Ben misses his plane at the airport, but for the first time has a clarifying and familiar phone conversation with Kelly.

It turns out that Fiercely's premiere flop has immediate consequences for Ben: it is changed during the vanity fair shoot. Instead of being placed between “O” and “W”, it is placed on the left side of the “P” and thus “centimeters away from being completely out of business”.

production

The film was shot in Los Angeles , Connecticut and Cannes , among others . Its production amounted to an estimated 25 million US dollars . The world premiere took place on January 19, 2008 at the Sundance Film Festival . A screening on May 25, 2008 ended the 2008 Cannes International Film Festival .

Reviews

Anne Thompson wrote on January 20, 2008 in the online edition of Variety magazine that the comedy was "delightfully amusing", which Art Linson, Barry Levinson and Robert De Niro - who gave the best representation in years and always "painfully true" work - owe. You can compare it to the movie The Player .

Scott Weinberg wrote on January 21, 2008 on www.cinematical.com that the film doesn't reveal a lot of Hollywood internals; it doesn't show anything new or shocking. Particularly amusing are the portrayals of Sean Penn and Bruce Willis, who would play themselves; Michael Wincott, Robin Wright Penn and John Turturro were also praised.

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.
