Envy ( Envy ) is an American comedy film of Barry Levinson from the year 2004 .
action
Tim Dingman and Nick Vanderpark are neighbors and friends, they also work in the same sandpaper mill. Vanderpark develops a spray, the "Vapoorizer", which makes the dog's excrement disappear. Dingman gets jealous, doesn't focus on work, and berates his boss. He is then released. In a bar he meets the J-Man who becomes his advisor. The J-Man is a guy between bum and organizational genius who gets into bizarre situations in the course of the film.
Tim Dingman accidentally kills Nick Vanderpark's favorite horse while drunk with a bow and arrow. He buries the carcass in his garden.
Nick Vanderpark offers a US $ 50,000 reward for finding his horse. Dingman and J-Man dig up the horse and want it to disappear outside of town so that J-Man can find it and collect the reward. Unfortunately, the horse falls from Dingman's wagon while it is being transported and remains missing.
Meanwhile, Vanderpark's wife is running for the city senate. She is harassed by demonstrators who want to know where the removed excrement would go.
Dingman's wife blames him for not being rich. Vanderpark offers him a business partnership, which Dingman accepts. The two travel around the world to promote their wonder drug. The night before the rally, the two speak out, and Dingman tells his friend about the horse's death; Vanderpark forgives him and wants Dingmann to remain his partner.
At the rally for the wife of Vanderpark the next day, the carcass of the dead horse drifts by on the river next to the substation. The horse is then taken to veterinary medicine for an autopsy. There it is stated that the miracle drug “Vapoorizer” in connection with feces can be fatal for living beings. This fact leads Tim and Nick to bankruptcy, whereupon both friends have to auction their property. In the end, Dingman comes up with a new invention (Pocket Flan).
Reviews
Michael Rechtsshaffen wrote in The Hollywood Reporter on April 30, 2004 that the comedy resembled a talk show on television. The plot is far too poor (“seriously under-plotted script”), which only partially compensates for the “brilliant charisma” of the actors.
Peter Travers wrote in Rolling Stone magazine on April 29, 2004 that the film was not even "half-baked". The critic scoffed with a play on words that the answer to the question asked in the film "Where did the shit go?" ("Where did the excrement go?") Was: "In the script".
The lexicon of international films describes the plot as "a chaotic farce [...] which all too quickly loses the courage to be anarchic exaggeration". The film leaves "countless construction sites, with the tone changing listlessly from satire to silly slapstick, from bitterness to lulling sweetness".
