action

Bill Murray as Richie Lanz at San Diego Comic-Con International , 2015.

Richie Lanz, an unsuccessful aging music agent from Van Nuys , California, travels with his remaining singer Ronnie on a United Service Organizations tour to Afghanistan . There is a curfew in Kabul when they arrive. Before the first appearance, Ronnie escapes with the help of the mercenary Bombay Brian and takes her agent's money and passport with him. Bombay Brian asks Lanz 1000 dollars for his help. In addition to the prostitute Merci and the taxi driver and translator Riza, Lanz gets to know the arms dealers Jake and Nick in the bar, who persuade him to go on a convoy to the province to transport weapons and ammunition to a Pashtun village. There he becomes aware of the extraordinary voice of Salima, the daughter of the leader Tariq Khan, who secretly sings Cat Stevens songs and watches the casting show Afghan Star . She dreams of appearing on the nationwide talent show, although Pashtuns are prohibited from singing secular songs or in public. Hidden in the trunk of Lanz's car, she secretly leaves the village. With his help, she seizes the opportunity to be the first female participant to appear in Afghan Star with the Cat Stevens song "Peace Train". After the performance, she is brought back to the village by her angry father. Lanz persuades Afghan Star's show master, Daoud Sididi, not to remove Salima from the upcoming audience voting. Together with Riza and Bombay Brian, he returns to their village, convinces Salima's father of his daughter's honorable actions and helps defend against the attacking Taliban who want to kill Salima for their “shameless” behavior and take possession of the village. Salima wins the audience voting and, with her father's permission, is allowed to participate in the next broadcast of the show.

criticism

“What amazed and delighted me about 'Rock the Kasbah' is the unusual delicacy with which director Barry Levinson treats the confrontation of American pop culture with traditional Islamic values by largely avoiding cheap caricatures and obvious Muslim gags. The result is a kind of ' slum dog millionaire ' between Kabul and Kunduz . "

- Titanic 04/16

“Actually every scene in 'Rock the Kasbah' has a moment of alien shame. And no, there is no ' mash ' in it, not even ' American Dreamz '. 'Rock the Kasbah' is just embarrassing. "

- The star

"Issues such as the unscrupulousness of arms dealers, opium cultivation and honor killings are touched on and then rather quickly forgotten again ..."

- Süddeutsche Zeitung

“... when Levinson Richie lets loose on the musically talented Pashtun Salima (Leem Lubany), his satirical approach fizzles out. Now the film propagates a simple worldview in which the Afghan population has room only as a dumb, armed to the teeth pack and where Salima, who appears in the music show 'Afghan Star' without a veil, the audience with sugary messages of peace from Cat- Stevens ballads soothed. Levinson sacrifices subversion in favor of a cozy feel-good morality. "

- Stuttgart newspaper

“... the story is simply implausible: an American underdog is just removing the centuries of oppression of women and effortlessly prevailing against the threatening gestures of backward bearded people. That is often more than embarrassing. "
