Slumdog Millionaire (Originally Slumdog Millionaire ) is an eight Academy Award-winning British film directed by Danny Boyle from 2008 . It was developed by Fox Searchlight Pictures produced and based on the published 2005 novel Q & A ( questions and answers , German: Questions and Answers ) by Vikas Swarup , whose translation under the German title rupees! Rupees! has appeared. The film was released in US cinemas on November 12, 2008, followed by its release in Italy on December 5, 2008, in Switzerland on January 21, 2009, in Germany on March 19, 2009 and in March 20, 2009 in Austria.

The film, shot in India, tells the story of the day in the life of 18-year-old Jamal Malik when he won the top prize - 20 million Indian rupees - on the TV show “ Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? “Wins. At the beginning of the film, the question posed to all observers is faded in like in a television quiz:

Translation

Mumbai, 2006

Jamal Malik is a question of
winning 20 million rupees.

how did he do that?

A: He cheated
B: He was lucky
C: He's a genius
D: It's fate

The film begins in a police station where Jamal is tortured. At this point he has already answered the penultimate quiz question correctly and is suspected of being a cheat. The police superintendent doubts that a former street boy from Mumbai could answer so many questions correctly. For the police officers as well as the host of the show, Prem Kumar, there is no doubt that Jamal must be a cheater, especially since Kumar himself comes from the slums and had to fight his way up. Flashbacks show how at the beginning of his show, addressed to the audience, Kumar made fun of the Slumdog candidate who, as a simple errand boy, in his opinion will never master the quiz. When the two met in the toilet during a commercial break, Prem had no qualms about even sending Jamal a wrong answer to the penultimate quiz question. But Jamal recognized the trap and chose the right solution. Shortly before the last question, the signal to the end of the program sounded, and the police, notified by Kumar, were already waiting outside the doors of the studio. Jamal was taken to the station, tortured and interrogated there .

When he can speak again and explain why he was able to answer every single quiz question, the inspector lets himself be captivated by his story. In flashbacks, the viewer learns about the life story of Jamal and his brother Salim in India, about the growing up of the half- orphans in the slum , the violent death of the mother in the anti-Muslim pogroms around the turn of the year 1992/93 and the meeting with the orphan Latika. Jamal tells of the involuntary time of the three children in the criminal begging organization of Maman, the escape of the brothers, the unsteady life as a hawker on trains and as an alleged tour guide at the Taj Mahal , of the murder of Mamans and the liberation of Latika and the subsequent break with his Brother up to the present life as a tea server ( Chai-Wallah ) in a call center . In the course of these events, be it by accident or by fate, he learned exactly what he was then asked on the television show. Each quiz question stands for a certain phase of life, which explains why Jamal is not interested in making money at all, but in finding his love Latika again through the television appearance, which he had already lost several times before.

Jamal became a media star overnight . The inspector is finally convinced of Jamal's innocence, releases him in time for the crucial television broadcast and brings him to the studio. His brother Salim, who sees Jamal on TV, then regrets his lifestyle as the henchman of the rich criminal Javed. He helps Latika, who has meanwhile made Javed his mistress , to escape and gives her his mobile phone and his car with which she wants to drive to the show. Jamal, however, can not answer the last crucial million-dollar question about the name of the third musketeer from The Three Musketeers , because he and his brother only learned the names of the first two musketeers, Athos and Porthos, and sometimes called each other that way. He therefore chooses the telephone joker and has the only number he knows by heart called - that of his brother. Latika, who is stuck in a traffic jam on the streets of Mumbai, sees him on one of the countless televisions in the window of a television shop and answers his call. The fact that Latika is alive upsets Jamal, but she cannot help him either. Jamal puts everything on one card and decides on answer A, which says that the third musketeer goes by the name Aramis - and thus answered the last question correctly by chance.

At the same time, Javed wants revenge on Salim for his betrayal. But Salim shoots his boss and is then - lying in a bathtub full of money - killed by his guards. Later that night, Jamal and Latika meet and kiss at Mumbai Victoria Train Station . The picture is paused and the answer to the question asked at the beginning is displayed: "D: It is fate".

This is followed by musical and dance credits in the typical Bollywood style.

inspiration

Simon Beaufoy wrote the script for Slumdog Millionaire based on the novel Rupees! Rupees! by Vikas Swarup (Original title: Q&A ). The Indian writer says he was inspired to write his novel by visiting one of the learning stations of the Hole in the Wall educational project .

Differences between film and novel

There are some differences between the book and the film: Ram Mohammad Thomas - this is the name of the protagonist in the book - was abandoned by his mother shortly after he was born, so he grew up in an orphanage and learned the English language from a priest. Salim is not his older brother, but his younger best friend. Instead of his childhood friend Latika, Ram loves the prostitute Nita, whom he only met at the age of 17. The love story plays a subordinate role in the novel. Topics such as homosexuality , child abuse , voodoo and nationalism are not addressed in the film, but the slum childhood, the religiously motivated riots and the begging organization . Parentlessness doesn't play as much of a role in the film as in the novel. The unsuspecting Salim in the book is portrayed in the film as unscrupulous and criminal, while Prem Kumar - the one in the book, the quiz show Who Will Win a Billion? moderated - plays a much more important role in the film than in the book. Ram does not escape voluntarily in the film, as in the book, but is forced to flee by Salim. The book is not structured chronologically according to the sections of the main character's life story, but follows the order of the questions. This results in a mosaic of individual episodes from which the life story gradually emerges. Sometimes Ram is younger, sometimes older. In the book, Prem Kumar is portrayed as a cheater who tries to cover up the fact that the television company has not yet collected the prize money. In the book, Ram is interviewed by a lawyer who wants to help him, in the film by one of the police officers. The lawyer does not appear in the film at all.

production

To improve the script, Beaufoy traveled to India three times and interviewed street children. In the summer of 2006, the British production companies Celador Films and Film4 offered the screenplay to the film director Danny Boyle , who was initially not interested in the material. Boyle changed his mind when he learned that Beaufoy the screenplay to one of his favorite films The Full Monty had written. Boyle was impressed with how Beaufoy linked different narrative strands from Swarup's novel and decided to make the film. The planned production costs were $ 15 million, so Celador was looking for another financier. 20th Century Fox offered a $ 2 million stake and Warner Independent Pictures offered $ 5 million. After the closure of Warner Independent Pictures by the parent company Warner Bros., the distribution rights for Slumdog Millionaire were sold to Fox Searchlight. Warner and Fox Searchlight share the cost and income of distribution.

In September 2007 the film team traveled to Mumbai and began employing local actors and film technicians. Boyle also decided to translate a third of the dialogue from English to Hindi , but told the film production company that only ten percent of the dialogue was in Hindi. In the final version, around 20% of the dialogues were translated into Hindi. The filming locations included the slums in Mumbai and the Juhu district . Filming began on November 5, 2007.

In the same month, Warner Independent Pictures and Fox Searchlight Pictures agreed to split the film rights equally. Slumdog Millionaire premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on August 30, 2008 and was well received by viewers. The film was also shown at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2008, was a hit with audiences and won the People's Choice Award.

By March 2009, the film was shown in most cinema markets in the world. The worldwide cinema receipts on July 15, 2009 were approximately $ 380 million.

Criticism of the behavior of the production company

In various media, criticism was voiced that the living conditions of the children's actors in the film had not improved despite the great success of the film. The film's producers responded by setting up a fund to get the performers into new apartments and to provide training.

It only took AR Rahman 20 days to compose the complete soundtrack. It consists of 13 songs and was released on January 13, 2009 by Interscope Records . The final track on the soundtrack, "Jai Ho", was originally written for the 2008 film Yuvvraaj . However, the director Subhash Ghai found the song inappropriate for the film and therefore allowed it to be used in Slumdog Millionaire . He can be heard there during the credits .
