Amitabh Bachchan ( Hindi , अमिताभ बच्चन, Amitābh Baccan, born October 11, 1942 in Allahabad , India ), also known as Big B , is an Indian actor. He is also a singer, politician and businessman. Bachchan is now considered one of the biggest stars in the Hindi film industry .

Childhood and youth

Bachchan's parents, Harivanshrai Bachchan , a poet, and Teji Bachchan, raised him in a cultured and literary household. He attended Sherwood College in Nainital and later Delhi University .

Bachchan as a national icon

Amitabh Bachchan

His first film was Saat Hindustani (1969). Bachchan only played a minor role in the film by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas . With his following roles he slowly gained a fan base and became a popular leading actor. He only became a star in 1973 with his films Abhimaan and Zanjeer . Zanjeer showed Bachchan for the first time as the "angry young man" who is driven on the offensive by oppression. Millions identified with his anger and idealism.

Fans remember him in hit films like Sholay , Amar Akbar Anthony, and Deewaar . Sholay is still considered to be the most successful Indian film of all time; Quite a few Indians said they had seen the film more than 50 times. Amitabh Bachchan's popularity has long been based on this classic of the Bollywood genre.

Life threatening injury

In 1983 Bachchan was in front of the camera for Manmohan Desais Coolie when he was critically injured while filming. In one action scene, he fell on a table, rupturing his spleen and losing a lot of blood. Back then he was given blood, which saved his life. He later became an ambassador for donating blood. The serious accident of the "adored" Bachchan was a shock for the whole country. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi personally visited the star at his bedside.

Bachchan continued to make films, but his career lost momentum after this incident. He made fewer and fewer films and his name on the poster no longer guaranteed the success of every production.

Playback singer

In contrast to many other Bollywood actors, Amitabh Bachchan sometimes sings himself in his films. The best example of this is Lawaris , whose songs have been well known ever since. Other famous movie songs with his voice can be heard in the films Toofan and Silsila . His unmistakable voice was also heard in the French documentary The Journey of the Penguins (2005) and as the narrator in the Oscar- winning feature film Lagaan (2001).

In the Indian House of Commons

After Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984, ran her son Rajiv Gandhi as the top candidate of the Congress Party in the Indian general election, 1984 . Bachchan ran in this election at the request of Rajiv Gandhi, a long-time friend of the family, for a seat in the lower house and was elected in the Allahabad constituency. In 1987 it became known that the Swedish arms manufacturer Bofors had paid bribes to win an order from the Indian government. Bachchan resigned as a member of parliament, thus ending his involvement in politics. Bachchan's family distanced themselves from Gandhi's family.

Company formation

In 1995 Bachchan entered the film production business and founded the media production company Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL) . In addition to films, the ABCL is also responsible for events. In 1996 the ABCL succeeded in bringing the Miss World competition to India and providing financial support. Due to the mismanagement of the then CEO Sanij Gupta and some loss-making films, the company got into financial difficulties and almost went bankrupt. The company is now back in the black and is now working closely with Reliance Big Entertainment .

Comeback in the late 1990s

Bachchan made other films in the 80s and 90s, but could not build on earlier successes for a long time. Mrityudatta (1997) was a flop. It was here that Bachchan wore a wig for the first time. Lal Badshah and Major Saab had a little more success. It was not until the turn of the millennium that he created with Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan (1998) alongside Govinda and the love drama Because my love is immortal ( Mohabbatein ) (2000), but above all with the worldwide sensationally successful blockbuster In Good and In Bad Days ( Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham ) (2001) made a cinematic comeback.

At that time, Bachchan was already a legend. In a BBC online poll in 1999 he was voted Superstar of the Millennium, ahead of Alec Guinness and Marlon Brando . In June 2000 he became the first living Asian to have a wax statue in his honor at Madame Tussauds .

In 2000, he hosted a new game show, Kaun Banega Crorepati , the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? . Bachchan was a calm, confident presenter and the show became a success. It was taken over by Shah Rukh Khan in 2007 and continued. Since the success of this show, Bachchan has starred again in many successful films, including And in the evening, happiness is waiting ( Baghban ), Veer and Zaara - The legend of love and Black .

On April 8 and 19, 2005, a retrospective film was held at Lincoln Center in New York . The films that were shown had Bachchan in the lead role: Hrishikesh Mukherjees Anand and Abhimaan and Sanjay Leela Bhansalis Black .

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.

Family life

After the success of Zanjeer , Amitabh Bachchan married Jaya Bhaduri , with whom he starred in many films. Some films with Amitabh and Jaya are: Zanjeer , Abhimaan , Sholay , Silsila , In good as in bad days .

The couple have two children, Abhishek and Shweta. Abhishek Bachchan has followed his father and has appeared in films like Refugee , Tera Jadoo Chal Gayaa , Dhai Askar Prem Ke , Hain Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya , Om Jai Jagdish , Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon - I long for your love , don't tell me anything Love , Zameen , LOC Kargil , Dhoom! - The hunt begins and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna - Until luck do us part played along. Abhishek Bachchan is married to Aishwarya Rai , who in turn is a popular Bollywood star.
