action

Bhanwarlal is a businessman and lives in Navalgarh, Rajasthan with his wife and sons Sunderlal and Kishan. Sunderlal is married to Gajrobai and has one son. When Sunderlal loses the annual camel race, he leaves the house out of shame and never returns.

Bhanwarlal's other son, Kishan, is married to the beautiful Lachchi. On the wedding night, however, Kishan doesn't want to know anything about his wife. At first he would rather earn money than live his life as a husband, so he told his wife Lachchi that he would have to travel for five years because the stars were favorable and such an opportunity would no longer arise. Lachchi is deeply sad, but that doesn't last long as Kishan will be back in the next few days. He tells his father, Bhanwarlal, that he met a holy sage who promised him five gold coins for every morning. Now that the young family's income is secured, Bhanwarlal has no objection to Kishan staying. Lachchi is overjoyed. When both are finally alone in the bedroom, the meanwhile friendly Kishan explains to her that he is a ghost. The real Kishan actually continued, but he, the ghost, fell in love with her so much that in order to be close to her he took on Kishan's form. Lachchi now has to decide whether she wants to spend the next five years with this sympathetic image of her husband - or whether she rejects the ghost and wants to wait for her dismissive husband. She chooses love and thus the spirit.

After four years there is another camel race and this time Bhanwarlal's camel wins. Then Lachchi becomes pregnant. On the day of birth, the real Kishan comes back. The whole family is surprised and doesn't know which of the two is the real Kishan, as they both look like twins. To find out, they seek out a wise shepherd who will give both of them tasks. At the end the spirit decides to put itself under the spell of the shepherd's water bag to prove its love for Lachchi. The water bag is thrown away by the real Kishan.

Lachchi is very sad when she hears about it. She has to live with the thought of not seeing her great love and her daughter's father again. When she comes to Kishan's room in the evening, veiled again, like on her wedding night, she explains to him that she knew about all of this and tells him about it before she has to start a new life with him. But he explains to her that he is the ghost and has entered her husband's body because he has promised her and his daughter that he will never leave them. Overjoyed, they hug each other and nothing stands in the way of happiness together. And the brother Sunderlal, too, returns to his wife and son.

layout

The film is a typical representative of the style called Bollywood . It contains many vocal parts and dance interludes. A pair of puppets comment on the activities of the mind. At the end a ballet appears, danced in the style of marionettes. The time of the action is not defined, but seems to be in the pre-colonial era. A slight criticism of the stubborn pursuit of profit can be seen. The shepherd who resolves the conflict does not want a reward: his animals do not eat gold.

The shooting was to take place in the Thar desert in Rajasthan . Since this was too expensive, an artificial desert was created. Originally, Ghost Ka Dost was intended to be the title of the film.
