Summary

The American director Robert Altman and the visual effects expert Gary Demos had already been selected as winners . Altman was unsuccessfully nominated seven times for a regular Academy Award and was honored this year for his creative work with the Honorary Oscar . Gary Demos is a two-time Scientific and Technical Award winner, a Technical Achievement Award winner, and has received the Gordon E. Sawyer Award .

After the nominations were announced on January 31, 2006 by Sid Ganis , President of the Academy, and actress Mira Sorvino , Ang Lee's drama Brokeback Mountain was the big favorite for the 78th Academy Awards with eight nominations. The independent film about the love story of two gay cowboys had already received the Golden Globe Award and the British Academy Film Award (BAFTA Award) in advance . However, Brokeback Mountain couldn't live up to its favorite status on Oscar night . Although the film won three Academy Awards in the categories of best director, best film music and best adapted screenplay, it lost the trophy for best film to Paul Haggis ' ensemble film L.A. Crash , which also won awards in the categories of best original screenplay and best editing . This is the worst result since 1976 , when John G. Avildsen's boxer drama Rocky only won three out of ten nominations for Best Picture of the Year. Peter Jackson's adventure film King Kong and Rob Marshall's adaptation of the novel Die Geisha also received three prizes each , which mainly scored points in the technical categories.
