Pia Clemente

Pia Clemente (* before 1989 in Manila , Philippines ) is a Filipino-American film producer. The short film Our Time Is Up , which she produced , was nominated for an Oscar in 2006. This made her the first Filipino-American woman to be awarded an Oscar nomination.

Life

At the age of three, Pia Clemente emigrated to the United States with her family . She attended Peddie School in Hightstown , New Jersey , where she graduated from high school in 1989. In 1990 she began studying at Barnard College , majoring in English and minor in theater and creative writing . She also played tennis and was nominated for the Academic All-Ivy ( Ivy League ) by her college in 1993 . However, an injury prevented her entry into professional tennis and led her to concentrate primarily on the theater class. She began working on her first short film, which won a Student Academy Award in 1997 under the title Christmas in New York . In 1993 she graduated from college with a BA . After that, Clemente worked behind the scenes , in the reception of an advertising film manufacturer and as a production assistant at Maysles Films.

When Clemente received an acceptance from the American Film Institute in 1995 , she moved to Los Angeles , where she has lived ever since. After graduating with a Master of Fine Arts in 1997, she headed the production of the independent film The Debut as a line producer . The film is about the identity of a young Filipino-American and shows parallels to Clemente's own life.

Clemente earns her living mainly in the advertising film industry. From 2000, she was employed by Orbit Productions for two years, after which she worked as a freelance producer of commercials for various companies, such as Coppos Films, Bob Industries and Moxie Pictures. She created spots for brands like Volkswagen, Direct TV, HP and Play Station 3.

A mutual friend introduced her to Rob Pearlstein , the director, screenwriter and co-producer of the short film Our Time Is Up . Pearlstein's witty and intelligent script convinced Clemente to work on the film, although he could not offer her or the rest of the crew any payment. When the short film came out in 2004, it received good reviews and was nominated for an Oscar in 2006 for Best Live Action Short Film. This made Pia Clemente the first American from the Philippines to win an Oscar nomination. Four months after this success, she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences . There she is a member of the nomination committee for the category Live Action Shorts & Animation and Foreign Film.

The surprising success of Our Time Is Up motivated her to stay in the film business and continue her creative work. In 2008 Clemente produced two more short films, a documentary about the religious community Shinnyo-En ( The Awakening Fire ) and about their annual lantern ritual in Hawaii on Memorial Day ( Where the Ocean Meets the Sky ). Clemente's short film Mabel (2013) portrays a businesswoman of the same name who, despite her old age, still works as a caterer .
