Affair in Manhattan (Original title: The Daytrippers ) is an American - Canadian comedy film from 1996 . It was directed by Greg Mottola , who also wrote the script . The main roles were played by Stanley Tucci and Hope Davis .

action

Eliza lives in a small town and is happily married to Louis D'Amico, who works in New York City . One day she finds a love letter to him that she talks about with her family. Eliza, her parents, her sister Jo, and Jo's friend Carl go to New York to confront Louis.

In New York, Jo argues with Carl. Her mother Rita says Carl is the best that Jo could expect in life . Jo recalls that Rita was already pushing Eliza to marry Louis.

The family goes to a party where Eliza sees Louis. She watches him for a while until he kisses a man. Only then does Louis discover his wife. It turns out that his relationship with the man has been going on for months. Rita calls Louis a pervert and wants the whole family to go back home. Eliza gets out of the car and speaks conciliatory to Louis. Then she goes for a walk.

Jo makes up with Carl, then catches up with her sister and comforts her.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on April 18, 1997 that the character of Eliza kept calm all the time. Her mother, Rita, is unbearable . The end of the film is disappointing . Ebert compared the dialogues with the dialogues in the film Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino .

Mick LaSalle wrote in the April 4, 1997, San Francisco Chronicle that the comedy was perfect for a low-budget film . He praised the cast and the presentations.

Awards

Greg Mottola won in 1996, the Critics' Prize of the Toronto International Film Festival , the Grand Jury Prize of the Slamdance Film Festival and the Audience Award at the Athens International Film Festival . In 1997 he won two awards for directing at the Portuguese Festival Internacional de Cinema do Porto . In 1996 he was nominated for the Grand Special Prize of the Deauville Film Festival .

The film was nominated for the Hungarian Csapnivalo Award in 2000.
