Jeff Gaffney works in the human resources department at MBI, a supplier to the US Department of Defense. Across from his house in the suburbs, which he lives with his wife Karen and two children, the realtor Meg is offering a house for sale. Shortly afterwards they meet their new neighbors, the couple Tim and Natalie Jones, who master every situation perfectly. Karen distrusts the all-too-perfect couple, and when she finds a bug in her house in a present from her neighbors , she realizes that something is wrong with the Joneses.
Karen and Jeff break into the Jones' house and find that they and Jeff's workmates are being spied on. Jeff and Karen report this to Carl, the chief security officer at Jeff's company. When they meet him, he is killed by a sniper . Jeff and Karen are also shot at, but unexpected help from the Joneses, who eventually reveal that they work as spies for the government. You have been assigned to monitor the employees of Jeff's company, as one of them is passing on secret data to an international arms dealer named "Scorpion".
A short time later they find out that the friends of the Gaffneys - the MBI rocket engineer Dan and his wife Meg, the broker - had contact with the Scorpio via Jeff's computer and want to sell a microchip from MBI to him. The two traitors are overpowered by the Joneses, and Jeff and Karen make each other available as decoys to handle the agreed handover of the microchips with the Scorpio. The Scorpio is a former MBI employee named Bruce Springstine. He recognizes Jeff and blows his cover. The Jones intervene, the scorpion and his henchmen are killed.
Several months later, while on vacation, the Gaffneys run into the Jones again by chance at a café in Marrakech , Morocco . However, they observed their target persons there. At that moment they are attacked by four men, whereupon a shooting breaks out between the Jones and the men. As they take cover under the cafe table, Jeff confesses to his wife how much he missed all of this.

The US-American criticism towards the film was rather negative, which on the Rotten Tomatoes site led to a rating of only 19% with 109 rated votes and an average rating of 4.4 / 10. Metacritic gave a Metascore of 34 out of 100 based on 31 reviews.
Christoph Petersen rated the comedy in his review of film releases with only 2 out of 5 possible stars and summed up: “The film owes its few funny moments to its leading actor quartet - but against the unimaginative script and the generic staging, even the four put up well Stars don't stand a chance. ”The Cinema editorial team judged the film a little more benevolently :“ The action seems a bit too violent, the humor a bit too banal. The mix is not completely convincing, but the cast's enthusiasm justifies a visit to the cinema. ”The film service wrote:“ A bland spy film parody that listlessly works on genre conventions and has nothing to offer except cocky action scenes.
