Three 6 Mafia (since 2013 Since Mafia 6ix ; also known as Triple Six Mafia , Backyard Posse ) is a 1991 by DJ Paul , Lord Infamous, and Juicy J , founded American rap group from Memphis , Tennessee . DJ Paul and Juicy J are the only permanent members. Three 6 Mafia won an Oscar in the film song category (original song) at the 2006 Academy Awards for the song It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp from the movie Hustle & Flow . This makes them the first hip-hop group to win an Oscar.

history

The group was founded in 1991 by DJ Paul (Paul Beauregard), Juicy J (Jordan Houston) and Lord Infamous (Ricky Dunigan) as Backyard Posse , shortly afterwards renamed Triple 6 Mafia (later Three Six Mafia) and by Koopsta Knicca, Gangsta Boo and Crunchy Black increased to six members. From 1991 to 1996, the group released many tapes that included various other rappers from Memphis in addition to the Mafia members mentioned. In the next few years many EPs will be released , first on Prophet Entertainment , then on their own label Hypnotize Minds Records .

After having two smaller hits in 1998 with Late Nite Tip and Tear Da Club Up '97 , Juicy J and DJ Paul released solo albums by various band members (Gangsta Boo, Koopsta Knicca), solo albums by external artists (Project Pat, The Kaze) and samplers ( Tear Da Club Up Thugs , Hypnotize Camp Posse , Da Headbussaz and Prophet Posse ) and Three 6 Mafia signed with Sony.

In 2000 the album When the Smoke Clears was released , which debuted at number 6 on the Billboard 200 charts. The single Sippin 'on Some Syrup rose to number 30 on the US Hot R&B charts. In the same year Koopsta Knicca left the group due to a dispute over money. Gangsta Boo dropped out in 2001 because of religious differences.

In 2003 Three 6 Mafia released the album Da Unbreakables . Lil 'Flip, Pimp C , Lil Wyte, Frayser Boy and Project Pat have guest appearances on it .

On March 5, 2006, Three 6 Mafia became the first black music group to win the Oscar for Best Song . They are also the first hip hop artists to appear at the awards ceremony. The successful song was It's Hard out Here for a Pimp from the Hustle & Flow soundtrack. This makes Three 6 Mafia the second rap artist, after Eminem in 2002, to receive an Oscar. On June 7, 2006, the Sony label announced the departure of Crunchy Black. The reason he gave was his solo album, which DJ Paul and Juicy J had not finished writing for several years. On April 5, 2007, Adventures in Hollyhood started a reality show on MTV in which the two last remaining members of the band, DJ Paul and Juicy J, filmed their daily lives.

In 2013, on the endeavors of Lord Infamous DJ Paul, Crunchy Black, Gangsta Boo, Koopsta Knicca and Lord Infamous himself united under the name Da Mafia 6ix .

In December 2013, Lord Infamous died of a heart attack in Memphis, Tennessee.

At the end of May 2014, DJ Paul announced that Gangsta Boo would no longer take part in Da Mafia 6ix and in July 2014 announced the release of the album Watch What U Wish on October 31, 2014.

On October 9, 2015, Koopsta Knicca died of a cerebral aneurysm at the age of 40 .

style

Three 6 Mafia is best known for their sometimes wild and adventurous samples, as well as for their lyrics, which are heavily centered on drugs, violence and pornography , even for rap . In addition, their earlier tracks in particular contain many occult allusions. Three 6 Mafia are part of the Dirty South Hip Hop scene from the southern states.

Hip-hop magazine The Source described her style in 2003 as an articulation of hell on earth , of poverty and crime in the ghettos of major US cities.

Almost every album that was released on Hypnotized Minds' own label contains a talking track in which attention is drawn to albums that have already been released and new albums are announced. This is now being copied by many crews.

Three 6 Mafia have influenced many crews in the southern United States with their style. A hallmark of the productions by DJ Paul and Juicy J is a fast hi-hat, as well as the 808 drums characteristic of many Dirty South productions.
