action

DJay is a drug dealer and pimp . He lives with " his girls " Nola, Shug and Lexus with their baby in a shabby hut. This life of a petty criminal does not make him happy, because his big dream is to start a career as a celebrated rap star. His idol here is Skinny Black, who is considered the new star of the rap scene. He states to everyone that he knew him from before and went to the same school as Skinny, even though this story is only a means to an end.

One day a homeless man turns him on a keyboard. Lexus is annoyed with DJay's dreams, but he doesn't let himself be deterred. There is an argument between him and Lexus and he throws her out with her baby. DJay continues with the idea of making music and then decides to fulfill his dream. He asks his friend Key to help him. They convert a room in the hut into their recording studio , but very quickly they discover that they cannot proceed on their own. So Key decides to call in the pianist from the parish. DJay has to find out that it is a white person.

But Shelby knows more than he expected. In order to raise money for the equipment , Nola is supposed to sleep with the owner of a music shop. She doesn't like that DJay uses her for his own purposes. But he tells her that he believes in her and that he thinks of her as a businesswoman with a cell phone and fancy clothes. However, there are other problems as well, because Key and Shelby are not that satisfied with DJay's lyrics. So they think of something else. The pregnant Shug is supposed to sing the chorus for a song. DJay is initially not enthusiastic about this idea, but is overruled by Shelby and Key.

As it turns out, there's more to the inconspicuous Shug than meets the eye. Little by little, the song “ It's Hard out Here for a Pimp ” is created. One day DJay learns that Skinny Black is in town for a concert and wants to throw a party afterwards. The owner of the bar hires DJay to supply the partygoers with drugs . DJay sees his chance here to give Skinny Black a demo cassette. The evening goes differently than planned. At first, Skinny Black takes no notice of his former schoolmate DJay. Only when he has supplied him with drugs is he allowed to sit down at his table. When DJay gives him his demo, Skinny makes fun of it at first, because cassettes have long been "out".

DJay reminds him of his beginnings and how Skinny sold his first songs on cassettes out of the trunk of his car.

As the hour goes on, DJay follows the rather ailing Skinny to the bathroom. There he finds him lying in front of the toilet bowl. When he tries to help him, he discovers that Skinny has thrown his tape in the toilet. Skinny also makes fun of DJay and there is a fight and a fight. The bodyguards become aware of the noise and a shootout breaks out. DJay escapes, but is arrested by the police in front of his house. Here, too, there are further attacks by gang members from Skinny's environment. DJay is arrested, but he can give Nola the demo tape. He asks her to take care of it.

DJay receives a visit from Key in prison . He tells him how life went on outside. Shug has had her baby and Nola is checking out all the radio stations to get the DJs to enjoy the demo. You can see Nola using her charms in a chic costume to get to the radio DJs. One day she is sitting in her car and a radio station is playing "her" song.

When DJay is brought back to his cell after Keys' visit, the guards notice him and discover that it is the rapper whose song is currently being played on all radio stations . They ask him if they can give him their demos.
