Taryn Manning (born November 6, 1978 in Tucson , Arizona ) is an American singer and actress .

life and career

Her father worked as a musician at night and as a hotel manager during the day. After his parents divorced, Manning grew up in Tucson. She took every opportunity to return to the east coast and visit her father. When she was 12, her older brother went to college and she moved to San Diego with her mother . It was there that she discovered her acting talent. During this time she was also very successful in sports . She became a state champion in karate for two years in a row . When she was 16, she became an American master of dance . She also took singing and acting lessons after school. Her classmates included Leelee Sobieski , Erika Christensen and Kirsten Dunst .

After high school, Manning took on minor roles in television productions such as New York Cops - NYPD Blue , Practice - The Lawyers and Pacific Blue - The Beach Police . In 1999 she also played a supporting role in the short-lived FOX series Six Under One Roof for 9 episodes as Rebecca Peabody.

In 2001, she tried in vain as a candidate on the television show Popstars . The following year she became better known for her role as the friend of the woman portrayed by Britney Spears in the film Not a Girl - Crossroads . This was followed by appearances in productions such as White Oleander , Eminem's autobiographical film 8 Mile , Hustle & Flow and Unterwegs nach Cold Mountain alongside Jude Law and Nicole Kidman . From 2013 to 2019 she starred in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black as prisoner Tiffany "Pennsatucky" Doggett.

Manning also works as a singer and musician. In 2003 she founded the band Boomkat together with her older brother. The group also contributed a track to Soundtrack of 8 Mile in, titled Wasting My Time . The band's debut album was called Boomkatalog.One (2003). After a long break, the second studio album was officially released in 2009 (online in 2008) with the title A Million Trillion Stars .
