Burn Notice is an American television series that is a former spy of American intelligence , Michael West, turning, trying to figure out who is responsible for his dismissal. The series is named after the Burn Notice , a message to secret services, be it your own or someone else's service, that a person is no longer trustworthy and therefore sidelined .

action

season 1

Michael "Mike" West is one of the best agent working for American intelligence until he was dropped in the midst of a contract in Nigeria for alleged offenses in the agent Lang sidelined (English: to get burned , see Series title.), Respectively. After he was able to save himself on a plane and passed out, he wakes up next to his ex-girlfriend and former IRA street fighter Fiona in his hometown of Miami . With the Burn Notice, Michael no longer has any money, house or papers. He cannot leave the city either, otherwise he will be arrested. Together with Fiona, his friend Sam, a former Navy Seal with many contacts with various authorities, and from Season 4 also with Jesse, a former counterintelligence agents of CIFA , Michael tries to find out who is responsible for his Burn Notice and why. His goal is to get back to his old life as an agent.

On the way there, the West is reluctant to become a private investigator and problem solver. Together with his friends, he helps people who cannot help themselves and also cannot go to the police. A special feature are Michael's efforts to solve problems without killing people, a quality that already distinguished him during his time as an agent. Michael and his team, however, keep getting in the way of federal agents and Michael's mother Madeline, who tries to re-establish contact with her son after the long years of Michael's absence. Michael's difficult childhood and broken family situation are also hinted at over and over again, which ultimately drove him to flee into military and espionage service.

While researching his Burn Notice in the course of the first season, Michael comes across a powerful secret organization that stands behind his cold position and does not shrink from murder in order to protect its plans. Michael tries to expose the masterminds, but this often leads to conflicts with his family and friends, especially Fiona, with whom Michael builds up a love relationship again over time. In the course of the series she also tries increasingly to prevent Michael from returning to his old life in order to instead build a new future with her. By the end of the season, Michael has to realize and accept that there is no quick fix for his cold position and that he is stuck in Miami until further notice.

season 2

In the second season Michael is assigned an operations manager named Carla from the secret organization behind his cold position, who forces Michael to carry out various assignments. Since the goals of the organization do not coincide with Michael's moral ideas, he complies only reluctantly to the orders, mainly to protect those around him and to gather clues about the organization. With Victor Steck-Epps he met another agent of the organization, who initially appeared as an opponent, but later supported Michael in his efforts. Accordingly, Michael was deliberately sidelined in order to be able to recruit him as an employee for the organization. Little by little, Michael can also uncover Carla's identity. In the season finale, Michael manages to get a meeting with "Management", a manager of the organization. Michael demands his freedom, whereupon management points out that Michael has always been protected by the organization from the police, secret services and the revenge of his enemies from agent days. He gives him the choice of continuing to work for the organization or of losing this protection. In the last scene Michael refuses any further cooperation and underlines his decision by jumping out of Management's helicopter into the sea off the coast of Miami.

season 3

By rejecting the organization, Michael now has to defend himself against the stalking of the police, former opponents and psychopaths. At the same time, he continues to try to reverse his Burn Notice. He is hoping for support from Tom Strickler, an unscrupulous mercenary broker. At the same time he establishes contact with the CIA agent Diego Garza. However, when Michael shoots Strickler to save Fiona's life, one of Strickler's mercenaries, Mason Gilroy, appears. He kills Garza and tries to win Michael over as a partner for a large-scale coup. Michael gives in to pretend to get more information and thwart Gilroy's plan. The coup turns out to be an act of liberation for a prisoner who is considered to be highly dangerous and which Michael cannot prevent. The sociopathic prisoner named Simon Escher reveals himself to Michael as a former agent, whose crimes in the field were transferred to Michael's personnel file by the organization and thus provided the reason for his being frozen. Escher wants to take revenge on the organization that arranged for his imprisonment and forces Michael to arrange a meeting with "management". Michael is able to prevent the attack and thus gains management's trust. The season ends with Michael's arrest.

Season 4

After gaining management's trust through the rescue, Michael returns to the organization for bogus at the beginning of Season 4, which releases him from custody. His new contact is Vaughn, who is also a senior member of the organization. Vaughn gives Michael several assignments, which Michael uses to gather more information about the organization. It presents itself as a secret society with far-reaching connections within all government agencies and secret services, which uses its influence to carry out covert, criminal operations around the world. To do this, she mainly uses agents like Michael, who are deliberately falsely compromised for recruiting. During one of his missions for the organization, Michael unknowingly also ensures that agent Jesse Porter, whose ID data he had used to steal secret service documents, is frozen. Jesse, who is initially unaware of Michael's role in the matter, turns to him in his role as a city-known problem solver to undo his cold position. Out of a guilty conscience, to prevent Jesse's murder by Vaughn, and because he could use the help of an experienced agent, Michael accepts Jesse into his team, which leads to a friendship.

With the help of his "admirer" Simon Escher, Michael finally got a cryptographically encrypted Bible that contains all the names of the agents of the organization. In the course of the season Mike loses the Bible, but later gets it back on a USB stick , completely decipherable , in which he steals it with the help of his friends in Santo Domingo . Vaughn also tries to get on the list, which ultimately leads to the final confrontation between a Vaughn-led organization team and Michael. With the support of Congressman Bill Cowley, however, Vaughn and his mercenaries can be arrested by the military. Michael is asked by unknown agents to come along to face an interrogation. The destination of the trip is the government complex of Washington, DC , where Michael's former recruiter and boss Raines welcomes him and congratulates him on his return.

Season 5

At the beginning of the 5th season, Michael systematically destroys the organization that has sidelined him with the help of the CIA. In Caracas they track down the organization's last man, who, however, commits suicide in his panic room before being arrested. Despite Michael's doubts, the organization is now considered to be completely destroyed. In the further course Michael can gradually regain the trust of the agency and gets more and more jobs that he does together with his CIA liaison man Max. In the episode, data thieves, Max is killed by a man named Tavian Korzha, who tries to attach the assassination to Michael through an ingenious plot. In order not to come under suspicion himself, Michael has to help cover up the traces of the perpetrator. He and his friends are under pressure to have to hand over the perpetrator before Michael's new CIA contact Agent Dani Pearce comes across clues that inevitably make Michael appear as the perpetrator. Due to the skilful actions of his opponents, Michael becomes entangled in an increasingly complex network of lies.

Michael's assumptions that there must be other people in the organization are confirmed with the appearance of Anson Fullerton. The psychiatrist of the Defense Intelligence Agency referred together with "Management" as the founder of the organization. He uses the repeated return of Michael's nemesis Larry Sizemore to induce Fiona to kill him. The explosive charge used by Fiona triggers an unwanted chain reaction that leads to severe devastation of the British embassy and the death of bystanders. This gives Fullerton evidence he can use to force Michael to complete assignments for him. This includes the deletion of Fullerton's file and thus his identity within the CIA network. Fullerton claims that Michael should create the conditions so that he can safely retire.

Anson reveals more and more details to Michael about how the organization works. In the episode Quid pro quo , he reveals to him that they had chosen him while his father Frank was alive. Taking on the role of Madeline and Frank's psychologists, Fullerton created a detailed profile of Michael. When Michael's father was suspicious of Anson's interest in his son, he investigated and was eliminated by a induced heart attack.

At the end of the season, Michael is supposed to shut down his new CIA team. It becomes clear that Fullerton does not want to retire, but is initiating the rebuilding of the organization, with Michael's operations team as new recruits. But Michael reveals plans to Agent Pearce Anson, who is forced to flee. In the meantime, Fiona turns himself in to the FBI to take the pressure off Anson against Michael.

Season 6

In season 6, Fiona is initially interrogated by CSS agent Jason Bly and then goes to federal prison . Meanwhile, Mike, Sam, Jesse and Dani Pearce unofficially go in search of Anson Fullerton. When Michael’s brother Nate is shot dead by an unknown sniper during his arrest in the middle of the season, Michael goes in search of the killer. With the help of his instructor Tom Card, he tracks down the perpetrator, CIA agent Taylor Gray, in Panama . From him, however, he learns that Card himself was behind the order to shoot. Card tried to cover up all traces of his involvement in the organization by Fullerton's murder. Michael teams up with Gray to expose Card's machinations. He takes advantage of the fact that he is believed to be dead after his mission in Panama. Gray is supposed to elicit a confession from Card in a personal conversation.

Since Gray is the last witness who can testify to Card's involvement, he is shot dead in the presence of Michael at the meeting with Card. Card makes the situation look like self-defense, while at the same time apologizing to Michael and asking for a fresh start. The simultaneously advancing CIA task forces rob Michael of the room for maneuver. In cold rage, he shoots Card and from then on has to flee with his friends and his mother from the CIA, which, under the guidance of CIA agent Olivia Riley, start a merciless hunt for the quintet. Trying to get out of the country with the help of new identities and a smuggler, however, proves difficult, especially when Sam is seriously injured during a mission. The attempt to uncover Riley's links to a drug cartel with the help of Agent Jason Bly and to get impunity in return fails with the cartel’s assassination of Bly. Michael still manages to force Riley to confess before he and his friends are arrested. During the group's three-week detention, Mike negotiates a deal with the CIA to keep his friends and mother away from jail for the rest of their lives. Sam, Fiona, Jesse, and Madeline are fired while Michael says goodbye to begin his new mission, to Fiona's horror.

Season 7

The narrative of the last season differs from the previous ones. It is thematically darker and dispenses with the usual secondary assignments, instead concentrating on a continuous narrative thread. As a prize for the freedom of his friends, Michael is supposed to infiltrate an internationally operating terrorist cell under the direction of Agent Andrew Strong, on which every spy of the CIA has failed. He uses his well-known situation as a sidelined spy and nationally outlawed murderer of a high-ranking CIA employee to build up a camouflage existence as a broken alcoholic in the Dominican Republic and to make himself interesting as a recruit for the terrorists. After nine months in so-called "deep cover" without contact to his family or friends, Michael is recruited by Randall Burke, the presumed head of the group, as a supporter for smaller jobs.

Michael's investigation leads to success when he finds out that Burke is not the leader of the terrorist cell. The former Delta Force soldier James Kendrick proves to be a strategic and ideological head . The group is characterized by close companionship through to absolute self-sacrifice. This can be seen in the liberation of a prisoner colleague named Sonya from Russian captivity when Michael’s recruiter Burke blows himself up for her and Michael’s liberation. This form of extreme solidarity made a lasting impression on Michael, as it stands in contrast to the sometimes purposeful, morally ambivalent way the US secret services deal with their employees and informants. This increasingly throws Michael into self-doubt as to whom his loyalty is to. Re-establishing contact with his friends as part of the mission also proves to be difficult, because they have to realize that they have been monitored almost completely for months, and because Michael's cover identity requires them to provide increasingly brutal help, including the elimination of targets. Michael's relationship with Fiona has hit rock bottom after nine months of absolute silence. In the meantime, she has entered into a liaison with the bounty hunter Carlos and tries to finally break away from her past with Michael. This contrasts with Michael's persistent feelings for her. His mother Madeline, on the other hand, is primarily keen to maintain the guardianship of Nate's son Charlie, her grandson, and to offer him a safe environment, without the constant endangerment of Michael's activities. However, as Michael's gradual rise in the hierarchy of the terrorist organization, they are inevitably drawn more and more into the operation.

Through the trust he has gained, Michael receives an invitation to a meeting with leader Kendrick, who subjects him to a mind test with the help of drugs in combination with psychological interrogation and torture methods. The background to Michael's work as an agent becomes known, for example details about his time together with his nemesis Larry Sizemore and the reasons for his constant attempts not to endanger human lives and to avoid collateral damage. Michael is able to maintain his credibility under extreme exertion of will and rises to the leadership ranks. The goal of his CIA mission is now to capture Kendrick. But the planned exfiltration fails, numerous terrorists and CIA soldiers are killed. When, of all people, Simon Escher reveals himself to be the leader of the exfiltration team, who was recruited by the CIA despite his unscrupulous and inhuman methods, Michael's belief in the institution he has worked for and in whose service he is despite his Burn Notice is broken always wanted to return. The way they act is in complete contrast to Kendrick's ideology, who, together with Sonya, sets out to save Michael from the CIA despite great personal risk. Michael kills Escher and thus prevents Kendrick's arrest.

The suspicious Kendrick suspects a spy in his leadership ranks. His suspicions initially fall on Sonya, with whom Michael has established an intimate relationship during the operation. To protect them, Michael identifies himself as a CIA agent, but at the same time makes his break with the secret service clear. Together with Kendrick, they work out a plan to deceive the CIA. Michael should hand over Kendrick to the CIA as requested, in order to then take over the management of the organization together with Sonya in his place. Michael’s friends didn’t hide his conscience conflicts. They are desperate to stop him from treason. When Fiona shows up at the site of the planned arrest and Sonya threatens to kill her, Michael has to make an irrevocable personal decision of conscience. He shoots Sonya and finally turns against Kendrick, but also brings his CIA mission to failure. His activity as an agent will be revealed via the news and thus forever destroyed in the future.

To protect his friends and family from Kendrick's arrest and revenge, Michael’s last chance is to secure Kendrick’s communication data from a secret facility in Miami. While Jesse is supposed to protect Madeline and Charlie from Kendrick's captors and bring them to a safe place, Sam, Fi and Michael break into the facility, where the final showdown takes place. A task force led by Kendrick arrests Michael, Fiona and Sam in the building. At the same time, another team from Kendrick's organization was able to track down Jesse, Madeline, and Charlie. Madeline sacrifices herself to save Charlie and Jesse, while Michael and Fiona cover Sam's escape with the communications data. They fatally wound Kendrick, who can still initiate the demolition of the building. Michael and Fiona are considered dead, Sam and Jesse are provisionally arrested by the CIA, but thanks to the successful backup of Kendrick's communication data, they are released again. In a final conversation with Agent Strong, they are told that the mission is considered to have been successfully completed and that Michael should receive a commemorative star on the CIA Memorial Wall . At the funeral for Michael and Fiona, Sam and Jesse wonder where they are at this moment. Sam also indicates that he would like to continue working with Jesse as a problem solver. In the last scene you see Michael and Fiona together with the sleeping Charlie in a remote house. Michael asks himself how he should explain all this to his nephew when he is older. Fiona suggests telling the story from the beginning, beginning with the words of the series intro: “My name is Michael Westen. I was a spy until ... "

production

According to Fox Television Studios President David Madden, in 2005 the company decided to focus on series production and got in touch with independent producers, including Mikkel Bondesen of Fuse Entertainment, who put Matt Nix in touch. Nix, who had no previous TV experience, submitted a concept for a spy series influenced by books from his childhood. One of his goals was, among other things, not to show a story about superpowers, but something that also seemed realistic and realizable for the viewer. According to Madden, those responsible were particularly impressed by Nix's approach of depicting a seemingly superhuman James Bond from his human side. Nix's first conceptual approach, which was presented to the USA Network, had an even darker plot and was supposed to take place in Newark (New Jersey) , but already contained sardonic humor . USA's Co-President Jeff Wachtel and the Vice-President Alex Sepiol, who is responsible for series productions, asked Nix to adapt more closely to the broadcasting concept with a lighter look and a relocation of the location to Miami. Nix revised his concept according to these wishes and Burn Notice followed the ideas of the transmitter concept: blue skies, attractive people, carefree dramas and stand-alone episodes with a hint of an overarching framework. A particular serial feature was the improvised manufacture of weapons.

Work on a pilot episode began around six months after the first draft. There were initial concerns on the part of the network in the choice of Jeffrey Donovan as the lead actor, since his series FBI Serial Crime - In the head of the killer (orig .: Touching Evil ) had previously flopped. However, the production team was able to prevail on this casting question. Bruce Campbell decided to take on the role of Sam Ax after five years of abstinence from television productions, as he said he was interested in the script, which he described as "different" and "refreshing". At the beginning, Donovan received a fee of $ 55,000 per episode, which he more than doubled to $ 125,000-150,000 in 2009. In 2010, with $ 200,000 per episode, he was one of the top earners in the series, making him twice as much as Jon Hamm , leading actor in the critics' favorite Mad Men .

The move to an ongoing storyline was a response to audience polls at the end of each season, according to U.S. Senior Vice President Alex Sepiol. The sixth season got the best rating. The positive response to the gradual change therefore encouraged the makers in their decision. With the announcement of the 7th season in May 2013, USA announced the end of the series. According to Matt Nix, the end was decided in a dialogue between the network, the broadcaster and the actors. In addition to financial aspects and questions regarding the actors, it was also a matter of not missing the right time for a degree. Similar statements were made by David Madden (Fox Television Studios) and Jeffrey Donovan. During the second season there were early deliberations and contract negotiations for up to eight seasons. With 111 episodes, the series has as many episodes as Miami Vice .

Stylistic and trivia

  • Michael West's voice regularly gives off-screen explanations about the actions of agents.
  • When a new person who is important in the episode or for the series is shown for the first time, the image is briefly frozen and the name and function of the character are shown to the viewer, sometimes turning it into a game, for example an opponent gets “real Bastard "faded in.
  • The design of the series alludes to well-known TV series and partly cites them:
    • Sometimes something technical is tinkered with, usually something small like MacGyver and less big than the A-Team .
    • Code names are borrowed from American television series, e.g. In one episode, for example, Michael Westen pretends to be "Steve Remington" based on the series Remington Steele , which for its part took up mostly well-known motifs from crime films.
    • Fiona and Sam impersonate police officers named Detective Cagney and Detective Lacey in an allusion to the series Cagney & Lacey . Sharon Gless , who plays Michael's mother Madeline, played Christine Cagney in Cagney & Lacey. In the episode Hot Paving (A Dark Road) (3x10), Tyne Daly plays an officer who has to extract information from Madeline. Tyne Daly played Mary Beth Lacey in Cagney & Lacey.
    • In the third season, episode 14, when Sam Ax poses as an employee of forensics, he puts on his sunglasses several times in conjunction with a dramatic sentence - obviously a reference to Horatio Caine from CSI: Miami .
  • In the 5th episode of the 3rd season, the actor Michael Weston plays the client. Character similarity to Michael Westen is attributed to the role.
  • Michael Westen drives the 1973 Dodge Charger that belonged to his father.
  • In almost every episode, at least one yogurt is eaten or at least mentioned.

reception

The series is considered to be very successful, both in terms of audience numbers and because of its long running time with over 100 episodes. At times Burn Notice was the leading series on American cable television. At the same time, it was also referred to as "probably the most unknown hit on television", which referred to the discrepancy between the running time / audience ratings and the public response, especially on the part of the critics. The origin of this categorization is a 2009 episode of the comedy format Saturday Night Live . In an episode with a fictional game show, the candidates are asked what exactly Burn Notice is, which at the time was ranked 8th in the top rated cable series. However, none of the candidates can say what the series is about.

Alan Sepinwall from Hotfix took up this parody for his review of the final 7th season and pointed out that it was difficult even for the viewer to describe what exactly Burn Notice was. The viewer would only know what it was about, while the focus of the series would have changed several times over the course of the series. He described the second season as the most balanced, which managed to achieve the best balance between character interaction, background plot, individual stories and the relationship between verbal banter and emotional moments. The series has always been within the guidelines and self-image of the station USA. With the 7th season, which is much darker and has an ongoing plot, these requirements have obviously been relaxed. However, since the seriousness of the background narrative always worked best in combination with the simpler and more carefree storylines in the episode, the last season seemed over the top. Still, he conciliatory concluded that while it wasn't always apparent what the series wanted to express, it was just fun in its best moments.

The German reviews of the first season were mostly negative.

“'Burn Notice', the latest series import from the United States, already presents itself with the two-part pilot episode 'Cold Set' as the ideal candidate for the series program of the leftover RTL stepbrother Vox: The pictures are lackluster and dull, the plot is sucked out and Half-heartedly copied from better role models and the protagonist about as charismatic as a mannequin with branded sunglasses. "

- Christian Heger : secret agent in need, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

The USA Vice President Alex Sepiol, who is responsible for series productions, described Burn Notice as important for the development of other series such as Royal Pains , Suits and Graceland . Alan Sepinwall also referred to it as a blueprint for other series of the station such as White Collar or Covert Affairs .
