history
The city of Le Palais-sur-Vienne takes its name from the Palais de Jocondiac from the Carolingian era. The church dates from Roman times. There is a Gallo-Roman tombstone in front of its entrance.
On the night of May 8th to 9th, 1943, Georges Guingouin, a communist and member of the Resistance , risked his life to blow up the rubber factory, which was very important for the German war economy. At that time there were only two rubber factories in France; the other was in Colombes , which had previously been bombed three times by the Royal Air Force on April 6, 29 and 30, 1943 . However, people were also injured, and Marshal Pétain skillfully exploited this situation on the radio and said: “There are even more dead, even more injured, even more destroyed houses.” Aware of this catastrophic effect, the Allied Commander-in-Chief demanded of the Resistance movement "Combat" to destroy the factory with explosives, but that was not possible. Despite the difficulties of moving from his base in Châteauneuf-la-Forêt , 30 kilometers away, Georges Guingouin decided to carry out the operation. Accompanied by René Duval, who had volunteered, he blew up two boilers on the night of May 9, 1943. When the factory was shut down for five months, the Germans lost 1,500 tons of rubber. However, the two resistance fighters were ambushed by the gendarmerie and almost died.
