Eymoutiers ( Occitan : Aimostier ) is a French village with 2,062 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Haute-Vienne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Limoges and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the canton of Eymoutiers . The inhabitants are called Pelauds .
geography
Eymoutiers is located in the Plateau de Millevaches in the Massif Central about 38 kilometers east-southeast of Limoges on the Vienne . Eymoutiers is surrounded by the neighboring communities Augne in the north and north-west, Saint-Amand-le-Petit in the north and north-east, Nedde in the east, L'Église-aux-Bois in the south-east, Chamberet in the south, Domps in the south-west, Sainte-Anne- de-Priest in the west and south-west, Neuvic-Entier in the west and Bujaleuf in the north-west.
The former Routes nationales 140 (today's D940), 679 (today's D979) and 692 run through the municipality .
history
The village dates back to the settlement around a monastery founded by the Holy Psalms mode. In 1428 Eymoutiers became its own diocese. In the meantime, during the Reformation, a not insignificant part of the population committed itself to Calvinism, so that the village was affected during the wars of religion (also: Huguenot wars ). Among other things, the city wall was razed.
