Mad Men is an American television series produced by Lionsgate Television and aired on cable channel AMC from July 19, 2007 to May 17, 2015 . In Germany, the series is broadcast in German on ZDF and ZDFneo as well as on Netflix and the pay TV series broadcaster FOX, also in the original sound. The seventh and final season was broadcast in two halves, the second part of which premiered on April 5, 2015 in the USA.

The title of the series is based on a play on words. The professionals employed in the advertising industry were traditionally referred to in normal American usage as "ad men" (comparable to the German term "Werber"). Due to the high concentration of advertising agencies on Madison Avenue in New York and alluding to the unconventional thinking typical of the creative industry, the (self-) ironic corruption of "mad men" is said to have developed from this in the 1950s, for which contemporary sources emerged hardly find any evidence.

content

The series is set in New York in the 1960s. The plot revolves around the fictional advertising agency Sterling Cooper , its employees, their relatives and the wider community. The focus is on the ambitious and successful advertising specialist Don Draper . He is a chain-smoking womanizer with a dark past that emerges as the series progresses. With successful campaigns for prominent clients, Draper becomes an important guarantor of the success of Sterling Cooper and later a partner in this agency. Professional competition, private relationships and conflicts as well as extramarital affairs of the main characters are rolled up in different narrative threads, whereby the perspective is increasingly expanded to other people over the course of the seven seasons of Don Draper and his team.

The plot is closely embedded in the social and cultural context of the time, with the social hierarchies of the time, traditional gender roles and the lifestyle of the 1960s supported by the economic boom and belief in progress being important motifs. Numerous political and social events of the decade (e.g. the election of John F. Kennedy and later the assassination attempt on him , the Cuban Missile Crisis , the death of Marilyn Monroe , the rise of the young Rolling Stones , early anti- racial demonstrations ) will always be resumed and reflected.

An attempt is made to reproduce the lifestyle and aesthetics of the era with great detail. The dialogues are rich in puns typical for the time and profession. The result is a stylized moral picture , full of allusions to the great social changes that the later years of the decade will bring with them.

season 1

At the beginning of the season, Peggy Olsen takes over as secretary to Donald "Don" Draper, the creative director of the advertising agency Sterling Cooper. In the beginning she has problems finding her way around her workplace with its unwritten rules, especially with regard to the cooperation between men and women of that time.

Don Draper is increasingly busy keeping his private life secret from those around him. He is confronted with his past when his younger half-brother Adam Whitman appears. Looking back, we learn that Don served as Dick Whitman in the Korean War on a lonely outpost under a Lieutenant Donald Draper. This died in an explosion caused by Whitman unintentionally. The slightly injured Whitman then assumed Draper's identity to escape the war and his dysfunctional family.

Don's wife, Betty Draper, is both under- and overwhelmed with her role as a housewife and mother and goes into psychotherapy. She begins to suspect that her husband is not being honest with her. Don's colleague Pete Campbell also finds out by accident that Don is not who he claims to be. He tries to blackmail Don in favor of a promotion.

At the end of the season, Peggy gives birth to a child whom she unwittingly carried after a one-night stand with Pete.

season 2

At the beginning of the second season, Don and Betty Draper's marriage became increasingly difficult. After learning of one of Don's countless affairs, Betty is forced to stay in a hotel for a while. He becomes a silent partner in Sterling Cooper.

After more than a year of absence, Peggy, now a copywriter, returns to Sterling Cooper and slowly but steadily earns the respect of her predominantly male colleagues. Except for Don, nobody here knows about the birth of their child, which will ultimately be given up for adoption. Only later does she reveal to Pete that he had a child with her. Ironically, he has problems fathering a legitimate offspring with his wife.

At the end of the season, Sterling Cooper merged with a UK advertising agency, causing unrest among the workforce and some changes.

Don and Betty pull themselves together again and Betty becomes pregnant for the third time.

season 3

Don's father-in-law in need of care moves in with the Drapers and messes up everyday life. His sudden death is particularly hard on daughter Sally. Shortly afterwards, the third Draper child, Gene, was born, named after Betty's father. Betty later finds out the truth about Don's past life and confronts him. However, she cannot cope with this breach of trust and after having already met the charismatic political advisor Henry Francis, she finally files for divorce.

There is no calm at Sterling Cooper : The merger with the British agency continues to create a tense atmosphere among the workforce. Don tries to win the eccentric hotelier Conrad Hilton as a client. A former colleague tries to poach Pete and Peggy and they are both considering leaving the company. In the end, however, they decide against it and at the end of the season they work for the company Sterling Cooper Draper Price (SCDP) , which was founded secretly and in a hurry to avoid the planned sale of Sterling Cooper to the big advertising company McCann-Erickson .

Season 4

After the divorce, Don lives alone in a small apartment in Manhattan. He spends his rare free time with fleeting affairs or prostitutes, too much alcohol and the war of the roses with ex-wife Betty. She has to realize that the marriage to Henry Francis does not automatically bring her the family idyll she hoped for. The pre-pubescent daughter Sally in particular is becoming more and more rebellious and constantly coming into conflict with her mother.

Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce (SCDP) can again assert itself successfully in the advertising business after its re-establishment. Although Peggy has continued to climb, she feels that her work is not adequately valued, as Don, as her manager, regularly reaps the credit.

Pete has his first child with his wife Trudy. After the largest customer unexpectedly left SCDP, the company got into enormous financial difficulties and they had to lay off half of the workforce in order not to go under. At that time - and to everyone's surprise - Don becomes engaged to his secretary Megan, whom he fell in love with while on vacation together.

Season 5

In the first time after his marriage to Megan, Don's professional commitment to SCDP waned, to the displeasure of Peggy and the company partners. After Megan quit her job at SCDP (a first test for the freshly married couple) and resumed her career as an actress, Don is fully committed again to the company.

Pete has moved to the suburbs with his family, but the daily commute is a burden and he misses life in Manhattan; all the more he tries in his job to win more customers in order to lead SCDP to stability and growth. To do this, he also has to renegotiate the cooperation with SCDP senior partner Roger Sterling, as both are fighting for the leadership role in customer care.

Peggy finally decides to step out of Don's shadow: With a heavy heart, she leaves SCDP and accepts an offer to head the creative department at the rival company Cutler, Gleason & Chaough (CGC).

Season 6

Megan's acting career picks up speed, but she doesn't feel as supported by Don as hoped, which gradually alienates both of them. The pubescent daughter Sally and her brother Bobby continue to make life difficult for them as well as Betty and Henry.

After two important customers surprisingly left SCDP, Don and his rival Ted Chaough from the also ailing agency CGC decide to merge the two companies to form Sterling Cooper & Partners (SC&P) in order to be able to assert themselves against powerful competitors like McCann-Erickson in the future .

So Peggy returns under Don's direction; however, both are meanwhile different opinions on almost all matters. Pete, who was thrown out of the house by his wife after an blown affair and temporarily takes in his demented mother in his small apartment in Manhattan, is not happy about the merger either, as his supremacy as a customer advisor is under pressure. He is all the more satisfied to be able to have a one-off position again in the newly founded SC&P branch in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, Don's alcoholism worsens and after several erratic decisions on his part, the other company partners decide to relieve him of his duties until further notice and send him on compulsory leave.

Season 7

Part 1

After a few months of absence, Don is allowed to resume his service at SC&P , but only under the strictest conditions. So he is u. a. forced to work for Peggy - which even works after a short time. Even so, some of the partners at SC&P are still trying to get rid of him. Ultimately, he only escapes his resignation because SC&P is previously sold as an independent subsidiary to arch-rival McCann-Erickson. At the same time, Don’s weekend marriage with Megan, who now lives in Los Angeles, fails because of the spatial and emotional distance that has formed between them.

Part 2

A few months later, McCann-Erickson decides to end SC & P's independence and to absorb it completely. With that the advertising agency finally ceases to exist.

Pete takes on a highly paid position at Learjet and is reconciled with his still-wife Trudy; in rural Kansas, the family starts over. Joan uses her industry contacts to found a production company for corporate films. Roger married Marie Calvet. Peggy stays with McCann and is consistently pursuing her career goal of becoming a creative director; In her private life, too, she surprisingly finds happiness with Stan.

Don goes on a self-discovery trip to California. He speaks over the phone to Betty, who is terminally ill with lung cancer, as well as Sally and Peggy. Whether he will return and be responsible for McCann's greatest success to date is indicated, but ultimately left open.

production

The script for the pilot episode was written by Matthew Weiner in 1999 , when he was still working as a writer for Becker . The television station HBO rejected the series in 2002, after which Weiner eventually turned to AMC. Weiner succeeded in getting Sopranos inventor David Chase interested in the script. This even led him to hire Matthew Weiner as a writer for his own series. Chase then enabled Weiner in the hiatus within the last Sopranos season to shoot the pilot for Mad Men with his film crew. However, since HBO only wanted the Mad Men project to go into series production under the direction of David Chase, Weiner stayed with AMC.

From August 25, 2014, the German premiere of the seventh season will be on Fox Channel.

From October 6, 2010, ZDFneo showed the first season of Mad Men on free TV. The premiere was advertised in trailers and advertisements with the texts “Behind every successful woman there is a man who stares at her ass” and “In the main role: the role of the woman”.

The decision to broadcast on the special-interest channel ZDFneo with its limited reach instead of in the main ZDF program was clearly criticized in the daily newspaper Die Welt by the authors Kämmerlings and Praschl. Christian Junklewitz from Serienjunkies.de replied that Mad Men is broadcast in the USA by the cable broadcaster AMC with a short range and that such a series is unlikely to appeal to the mass audience served by ZDF. The free TV premiere saw 80,000 viewers, the total market share was 0.4 percent, which corresponds to a doubling of the channel average.

The second season of the series was broadcast from September 7 to November 30, 2011, the third season from December 7, 2011 to February 29, 2012 on ZDFneo. ZDFneo showed the fourth season from February 13 to May 8, 2013. The fifth season was shown on ZDFneo from November 5, 2013 to February 18, 2014 and the sixth season was broadcast there since April 14, 2015. From August 9, 2016, all 14 episodes of season 7 were shown as free TV premieres on ZDFneo.

Switzerland

In Switzerland, SRF 1 began broadcasting the first season of the series on August 18, 2011. The fifth season has been running since February 17, 2014.
