Matthew Weiner (born June 29, 1965 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American screenwriter , novelist , director and television producer . He is the inventor of the television series Mad Men , for which he is also active as executive producer, lead writer and showrunner . Weiner also worked as a writer and producer for the successful series The Sopranos . He has been awarded the Emmy eight times for his work, five years in a row in the “Outstanding Drama Series” category ( The Sopranos 2007, Mad Men 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011), and three times in a row with the Golden Globe ( Mad Men 2008, 2009, 2010).

Life

Weiner comes from an American Jewish family and grew up in Los Angeles . He graduated from the University of Southern California . After various jobs as a screenwriter (including for the sitcom Becker ), he developed a script for a pilot episode of the Mad Men series in 2000 . He applied to David Chase , the producer of the Sopranos . Chase did not take over the series, but hired Weiner to write the Sopranos . Weiner was involved in twelve scripts, including the two Emmy-nominated episodes "Altes Leid, Junges Glück" and "Kennedy and Heidi". In two episodes he also has a brief appearance as Mafia expert Manny Safier.

After the Sopranos ended , Weiner looked for a television station that was ready to produce Mad Men . HBO and Showtime refused, the series was finally taken over by AMC , a broadcaster that had not produced its own series until then. Weiner is the responsible producer (since 2008 with Scott Hornbacher ) and writer of the series, and he has also directed the last episodes of the six seasons so far. The first season was already well received by the critics and received a response from the audience. AMC launched a large-scale advertising campaign for the second season, and since then Mad Men has been one of the most popular TV series on American television. Weiner's contract ran until the seventh and final season, which aired in 2014 and 2015.

Weiner's first feature film Are You Here premiered in Toronto in September 2013. His first novel, Heather, the Totality (German: Alles über Heather ), was published in 2017.

In 2018, written by Weiner and produced series celebrated The Romanoff about descendants of the eponymous Russian noble family premiere at Prime Video , the online video library of Amazon . The series consists of eight episodes which, as independent feature films, are part of an anthology .

Weiner lives in Los Angeles, is married and has four sons, two of whom have starred in Mad Men . The eldest son Marten plays the role of the neighbor boy Glen Bishop in some episodes, Charles Weiner can be seen as an extra in the episode "In the Hall of the Mountain King".

Awards

Weiner has received nine awards for his work and has been nominated for TV awards fifteen times.

With The Sopranos Weiner received two Emmy awards in the “Outstanding Drama Series” category (2004, 2007), and in 2008 the Writers Guild of America Award in the “Dramatic Series” category.

He was even more successful with Mad Men : the series won the Golden Globe in the “Drama” category three years in a row , and the Emmy four times in a row in the “Outstanding Drama Series” category. Weiner received three more Emmys in the “Outstanding Writing” category for the pilot episode “Schall und Rauch” and as co-author for one episode each of the second season (“The Calm on the Abyss”) and the third (“Shut The Door. Have A Seat "). To date , Mad Men has won four Golden Globes, 14 Emmys and 37 other awards.

Weiner has also received awards from the Producers Guild of America , Writers Guild of America, and BAFTA .
