AMC is an American television station that broadcasts feature films and self-produced series. Originally the letters stood for American Movie Classics . After a change in the program direction in 2002, this name is no longer used. AMC is owned by AMC Networks , formerly Rainbow Media, a subsidiary of Cablevision . It is based in New York City .

history

Charlie Collier, CEO and President of AMC since 2006

In the 1980s , AMC established itself as a pure pay-TV channel without advertising, showing primarily Hollywood classics from the first half of the 20th century. In-house productions were not part of the program. In 1989 the station had 39 million subscribers . AMC is available in nearly 97 million US households.

Together with The Film Foundation founded by Martin Scorsese , AMC started a film festival in 1993, the proceeds of which went towards film restoration . As a result, classic films believed to be lost were shown on AMC, including black and white and silent films . Retrospective series focusing on one artist over several days were also shown.

With the Remember WENN series , AMC broadcast its first in-house production from 1996 to 1998. It was replaced in 1999 by the series The Lot , which ran until 2001. Both series deal with a radio station or with a film studio at the time of the Second World War - the time in which the majority of the AMC program was created.

On September 30, 2002, the station was given a new direction by focusing less on classic films. Films from all eras were now shown with commercial breaks. The station, which up to that point could only be received in the USA, was also fed into the Canadian cable network on September 1, 2006 by Shaw Communications .

In 2007, AMC began producing television series under new managing director Charlie Collier and had Mad Men and Breaking Bad produced. Both series turned out to be both popular and critical successes and won many awards. In 2009, AMC broadcast the commissioned six-part miniseries The Prisoner . In 2010 AMC had Rubicon produced. Despite good reviews, the mystery series was discontinued after only one season due to poor audience ratings. In the same year, the zombie series The Walking Dead , based on the comic of the same name , started, which surpassed all previous ratings on AMC. In the main target group of 18- to 49-year-olds, The Walking Dead is now the most successful television series. The series has now been extended for an eleventh season. In 2011, AMC had the crime series The Killing produced. The series, which is a remake of the Danish series Commissioner Lund - The Crime , had good reviews and ratings. It was extended for a second season. After the end of the series had already been announced, the series was nevertheless extended for a third and final season. The video-on-demand provider Netflix then took over the series for a fourth season. A western series has been running on AMC since 2011 with Hell on Wheels . In 2013, the television series Breaking Bad ended with great media interest and an audience rating of 10.28 million. In the same year, Low Winter Sun started a crime series, which was traded as a follow-up series for Breaking Bad. However, due to low viewership, the series was not extended. Due to the success of Breaking Bad , a prequel for the series was commissioned. Better Call Saul launched in February 2015 and a third season aired in 2017.

In addition to the original programs, the replay rights to the broadcast of CSI Miami were acquired for 2012 . Since 2011, the live talk show Talking Dead has been broadcast after The Walking Dead , in which the previous episode is discussed. Due to its success, the concept was adopted in 2013 under the title Talking Bad for Breaking Bad . In 2012, AMC launched four reality shows : Inside the DHS , The Pitch , Comic Book Men, and Small Town Security . In October 2014, AMC stopped its reality series, with the exception of Comic Book Men and Talking Dead , to focus on television series.
