Into the Badlands is an American science fiction - action series with martial arts -elements by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar , who at 15 November 2015 at the transmitter AMC premiered. The series is loosely based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West . The series has three seasons with a total of 32 episodes. The last episode aired on May 6, 2019.

season 1

In the distant future, a feudal society has emerged, the so-called badlands. The wars were so long ago that nobody remembers them. Before the barons came to power, darkness and fear ruled the country. Seven men and women forged order in the chaos and people gathered around them, but protection turned into slavery. The barons banned firearms from the badlands and began training death fighters they called clippers . These now protect their barons and their lands from pillage by highwaymen and nomads and from attacks on their forts. The barons who rule the seven zones are all extremely strong and brutal people, and they have control over the respective resources of their zone .

Sunny, an experienced clipper and regent of his baron, meets a group of pilgrim nomads whom he kills in battle. He finds a boy locked in a box. MK, as its name is, is the only survivor of a massacre wrought by the highwaymen in a village. Sunny takes the boy to the fort, where he trains young men, known as Colts, to be clippers on behalf of his baron. Sunny believes that MK will survive there longer than alone in the Badlands. Quinn has the largest army of clips in the Badlands. With Quinn, the Clipper have all the freedoms in the world, guns and women receive meals - but their loyalty then belongs exclusively to their baron. Quinn cultivates poppies on his lands from the slaves known as cogs, because each baron in the Badlands manages a different resource. The poppy seeds can only be processed with the oil from the oil fields of the widow, a baroness of the Badlands. But she also poses a threat to him, as Quinn realizes that the widow was responsible for a number of robberies on his transports recently.

Sunny soon realizes that MK is keeping a secret and that everyone is looking for him all over the Badlands. Sunny trains the boy, teaches him self-discipline and passes on his experiences to him. To find out how MK can control his powers, he pushes the boy to his limits. Sunny does this not entirely unselfishly, because he and his pregnant friend Veil want to leave the Badlands, and MK, who pretends to know a way out, seems to be the key to their escape.

According to the makers, season 2 of Into the Badlands should focus more on the development of individual characters. After Sunny and MK have been separated, they find themselves far apart in places that seem unreal to them. Sunny is in a prison, a brutal labor camp, and there meets the mysterious prisoner Baije, who also has questionable morals. Sunny is determined to return to the Badlands to find his family. Along the way, he is supported by new allies whose true motives are far from honorable. MK, on ​​the other hand, is still trying to get a grip on his forces. Meanwhile, the widow tries to expand her power and control the other barons. Alliances are formed, friendships are betrayed and ultimately events are set in motion that should completely change Sunny's and MK's lives.

Daniel Wu could be won for one of the leading roles in the series, previously in the Hong Kong films Enter the Phoenix (2004) and Hong Kong Crime Scene (2005), in the film The Call of the Emperor (2006), in the Yakuza film City of Violence (2009), but also in films such as Tai Chi Zero (2012) and The Man with the Iron Fists (2012), gained experience in Martial Art and Wǔxiá films and thus the filming of Chinese sagas. The shooting of the first season took place in New Orleans and in the nearby former military base Fort Macomb in the US state of Louisiana. As it became known in July 2016, the Irish capital Dublin and the port city of Wicklow are to serve as a backdrop for the second season , probably for the legendary city of Azra outside the Badlands, to which MK was abducted at the end of the first season. The filming there is said to have taken place over 16 weeks from August 2016. The last recordings there were in the area around the Cliffs of Moher , steep cliffs on the southwest coast of Ireland. Recordings for films such as Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and The Prince's Bride had already been made there in the past . The original plan was to shoot the second season in New Zealand .

The theme music for the first season of the series was composed by David Shephard . With the beginning of the second season, Trevor Yuile also worked on the music for the series. A soundtrack of Shephard's music, comprising a total of 26 pieces, is due to be released by Varese Sarabande on August 20, 2018.

Radiance and exploitation

In the USA, the first season was shown from November 15 to December 20, 2015 on AMC . Two days after the US broadcast, the new episode was published in the original language, optionally with subtitles, on Amazon Prime. The German-language dubbed version followed on February 5, 2016 and is available on Amazon Prime. From November 13, 2016, the first season was broadcast on RTL II on German free TV.

After it became known in early March 2016 that AMC was extending the series by a ten-part second season, the broadcaster announced details of the plot of the sequel shortly afterwards. The second season is expected to be broadcast for the first time in spring 2017. In November 2016, AMC published a first teaser for the second season. With the opening episode Tiger Pushes Mountain , the second season has been shown since March 19, 2017.

In April 2017, the production of a 16-part third season was announced, which first aired on April 22, 2018. This was also shot in Ireland, including again in Dublin.

The film and series portal moviejones said about the series after its US launch: Into the Badlands is definitely a matter of taste, some might not like the trash factor. But if you just want to see a cool, imaginative martial arts series without asking too much about logic or expecting too much depth, you will have fun. There is definitely cult potential .

Pilgrim continues his crusade and gives the rule that anyone who does not submit to the gift should die. The harbingers are led by MK. Cressida fears her vision and Pilgrim's growing madness. Sunny, Bajie, Kannin, Moon and the Black Lotus attack Pilgrims Fort, while the Widow, Tilda and Gaius set out to destroy the meridian chamber. You will find a nomad village whose inhabitants were brutally executed by Pilgrim's people. Pilgrim uses the meridian chamber to equip other people with the gift. Anyone who resists this will not survive. Just when Cressida rejects the transformation, they are attacked. A fight also begins in the meridian chamber, because MK attacks the widow, Gaius and Tilda. Cressida flees and escapes an attempt to kill Moon, who has to face other fighters. Pilgrim's army is defeated, but even alone he is a worthy opponent for Sunny, Bajie and Kannin. MK accidentally seriously injures Tilda. Anger at this reactivates the widow's gift and she kills him with ease. Sunny is seriously injured, but with the help of the other two he can kill Pilgrim before he dies himself. The widow and Gaius destroy the meridian chamber and set off with the wounded Tilda to see a healer. In the realm between life and death, Sunny meets the master. She reveals to him that his gift was unleashed at the moment of his death and that he will find his way back into the world in due course. She also explains that something even more dangerous than Pilgrim awaits the world. In the ruins of the meridian chamber, Eli, one of MK's friends, finds a weapon from the old days: a revolver. He fires a test shot.
