I Am Number Four is an American action - thriller from 2011, which on the eponymous novel by Pittacus Lore , a common pseudonym of the writer James Frey and Jobie Hughes , is based. The film was released in German cinemas on March 17, 2011.

action

Number four is an alien who, along with eight other children, was sent to Earth from the planet Lorien to escape the invading Mogadori army that destroyed their home planet. He is protected by Henri, his guardian, and because of his extraterrestrial origins, he has some superpowers that increase with age, which manifest themselves in increased speed, agility, strength, telekinesis and the generation of energy flashes in his hands as well as heat resistance.

The Mogadori, led by their commander, travel to Earth to find and eliminate the nine youths. However, these can only be killed in a certain order and are scattered all over the world. After Number Three is wiped out, Number Four and Henri flee Florida to Paradise, Ohio in order not to be discovered . There Henri forges documents for number four, in which he is called John Smith, but he is supposed to go into hiding first. But John doesn't want to hide and goes to the local school, where he soon befriends Sam, whose father was interested in aliens but disappeared while researching them. He also falls in love with his classmate and amateur photographer Sarah. Their ex-boyfriend, the athlete Mark, begins to bully John and Sam. Since Mark thinks John and Sarah are lovers, his friends ambush both of them on a ghost train ride through the woods during a Spring Festival and try to beat John up. He uses his superpowers to save himself and Sarah. John almost breaks Mark's arm. Sam witnesses this event and John has to explain the true story of his origins to him. Shortly thereafter, Mark's father, the local sheriff, investigates the incident and questions Henri about John's involvement in it. Henri therefore wants to move on immediately, but John refuses because he has fallen in love with Sarah. Lorians only fall in love once in a lifetime and stay connected for a lifetime. Henri then gives him 24 hours to say goodbye.

Meanwhile, the Mogadori are looking for Number Four and manipulate two conspiracy theorists into capturing Henri. When John and Sam try to save him, they are attacked, but the Mogadori fight back and steal some artifacts, including a blue stone that can be used to locate other Lorians. However, Henri is fatally injured and dies while the three of them flee. Sam also has a blue stone that his father once owned and that he left behind when he disappeared. Sam hopes to find his father again with the help of John. Sam drives home to get the stone while John tries to explain to Sarah that he has to leave her. He finds her at a party where Mark sees him and lets his father know. John must use his powers to escape from this situation, thereby revealing to Sarah who he really is.

Meanwhile, the Mogadori reach Paradise and block the car of the sheriff and his son. The commandant injures the father and forces Mark to lead him to number four, who is hiding in school with Sarah and Sam. There number four unexpectedly meets the female number six, who, after the murder of her guardian, decided to fight the Mogadori instead of running away again. Together they manage to defeat the Mogadori soldiers and their commanders.

The next day, John and Number Six put the blue artifacts together so they can locate the remaining four Lorians. They decide to unite with them to find Sam's father and protect the earth from the Mogadori. The purified Mark, who has lured the police on the wrong track, and Sarah, who promises John to return soon, stay in Paradise.

criticism

The response to the film shows a different perception between film critics and the general public. While Rotten Tomatoes scored only 33% percent positive in 158 reviews, 58% rated the film as positive from 100,000 viewers. Metacritic documented an average rating of 36% in 30 professional film reviews. For Roger Ebert , the well-known film critic, this phenomenon is a mystery. So he wonders how one could like such “shameless and unnecessary” and wonders “why the audience enjoys seeing lengthy scenes full of senseless action”.

"The basic conflict - loneliness and pressure to conform in puberty - offers only stereotypes, the mystical science fiction counterworld is listlessly stolen, and lead actor Alex Pettyfer has distinctive facial features, but no charisma."

- critic.de

“An unbalanced mixture of high school romance, thriller, horror and science fiction film, which never harmoniously combines its disparate elements. Numerous offers of identification and references to well-known genre motifs are lost in the hustle and bustle of a striking staging that relies on special effects and overwhelming. "

publication

After the film had already started in the USA on February 18, 2011 and had a budget of 60 million US dollars and generated worldwide revenues of 150 million US dollars, including 55 million US dollars in the US, came he will be in cinemas in Germany on March 17, 2011.

Effects

I am number four, along with Cowboys & Aliens and Fright Night, are one of those films that did not have the box office success they had hoped for, so at the end of 2011 the DreamWorks studio was extremely poor financially.
