Eagle Eye - Out of Control (Original title: Eagle Eye ) is an action - thriller from director DJ Caruso from the year 2008 with Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan in the lead roles.

action

During a secret operation by the US military , numerous innocent people are killed by drone rockets during a funeral in a mountain village in Balochistan . This action was conducted via remote control and video recordings from the Pentagon . The US President issued the order against the advice of the Secretary of Defense after the computer-aided detection system confirmed the presence of a terrorist leader with a probability of only 51% and recommended that the action be stopped.

The aimless Jerry Shaw works in a copy shop in Chicago and is usually short of cash. He's the exact opposite of his ambitious twin brother, Ethan, an Air Force officer . Jerry learns from his parents, with whom he has not had any contact in years, that Ethan died, apparently in a traffic accident. Shortly thereafter, he notes that his bank account , surprisingly, a balance in the amount of 751,000 US dollars has. In addition, various weapons, chemicals for building a bomb and forged passports are delivered to his apartment. An unknown caller asks him to flee the apartment immediately, but seconds later a special task force of the FBI arrests him .

Jerry is suspected of terrorist activities and questioned. Shortly afterwards, with the help of the caller, he manages to escape, whereby a construction crane, the rail traffic of the local subway, various digital displays and cell phones manipulate Jerry to make the caller follow her instructions.

He is asked to get into a car in which a woman he does not know is at the wheel: Rachel Holloman, who is being blackmailed by the same caller, to follow her instructions. If she refuses, Rachel is threatened that the train her son is on to Washington, DC will derail.

During the joint escape from the FBI and the police , the two are guided by the woman's voice over the navigation system of the escape vehicle. Traffic lights are switched to green as if by magic, and remote-controlled cranes stop their pursuers in a junkyard and help the two of them escape.

The two are also helped by other people who are blackmailed by the stranger over the phone and forced to take various actions. It turns out later that the supposed woman a simulation of the Pentagon standing supercomputer ARIIA ( A utonomous R econnaissance I ntelligence I ntegration A nalyst is) who is planning, management level of government from office to remove further bloodshed because of To prevent wrong decisions by the government and the resulting acts of revenge. ARIIA considers the president to be a danger to the citizens of the USA , as he drives innocent victims and relatives of the military attacks into the arms of actual terrorists through rash military strikes, which are of no use but provoke retaliatory strikes against US citizens.

Therefore, the president and other members of the government are to be eliminated, namely all persons who succeed the President of the United States before Defense Secretary Callister, who followed the advice of ARIIA during the military attack and wanted to break off the attack, and ARIIA has now been selected as a designated survivor and is currently being held captive in a safe room. The supercomputer controls numerous electronic devices, especially the many networked surveillance systems and cameras, and can use them to observe people's actions.

ARIIA does not regard their actions as illegal, but always within the framework of the laws and regulations. In monitoring citizens, for example, it relies on the USA PATRIOT Act signed by the Bush administration , according to which it is permitted, if there is sufficient suspicion, to eliminate a national security threat by any means. Since this national threat is currently emanating from the commands of the leadership, the top chain of command itself must now be abolished, and ARIIA thus begins "Operation Guillotine". According to the United States' Declaration of Independence , the people have the right to abolish the current government if any form of government goes contrary to the purposes of the declaration; In eliminating the political executive, ARIIA relies on the United States Constitution , according to which its actions are legitimate if doing so averts harm to the people.

To carry out the plan, during the State of the Union Address address given by the President in the Capitol, an acoustic trigger, smuggled in his trumpet by Rachel's unsuspecting son, detonates the new explosive crystal worn by Rachel as a jewel. Jerry's biometrics, voice, etc. are needed to undo Ethan's attempt to stop ARIIA.

Jerry prevents the attack by interrupting the national anthem played by Rachel's son and a children's orchestra with gunshots. He is shot down as an alleged assassin. Jerry's original pursuers help him and can incapacitate ARIIA.

Finally, Jerry and his deceased brother are awarded a medal of honor because he tried to prevent and uncover the plans of ARIIA, but was the victim of a car accident due to traffic lights manipulated by ARIIA. Defense Minister Callister explains to a committee of inquiry that the ARIIA project will not be pursued any further and that one must be careful that the measures taken to safeguard freedom do not themselves become a threat to freedom.

Jerry appears at Rachel's son's birthday party and is kissed by her on the cheek in thanks.

Reviews

"Turbulent tension cinema with borrowings from style-defining role models, which, based on an idea by Steven Spielberg , was primarily staged for confusing effects."

“If films like Syriana or Rendition tried to integrate explosive content in an elaborate way in dramaturgically popular forms, Eagle Eye is the noise variant tailored to mainstream tastes. An almost continuous, racing sequence of chases covers all the imponderables of the plot due to the maddening speed, the warning sign of the total surveillance state serves primarily as a vehicle for sophisticated action sequences. But perhaps this warning is staged spectacularly enough to make those viewers think, even within the broad target group of such a film, who consider the arch-reactionary gun lobbyist, radical anti-abortionist and governor of Alaska to be a suitable Vice President of the USA. "

- Jörg Schiffauer, Ray film magazine

“Basically, 'Eagle Eye' is a rather confused paranoia thriller, in which a supercomputer with a woman's voice on hold switches and does what it wants in the global computer networks, and two handsome main characters who trust God through a crazy obstacle course well-deserved happy ending rushes. On the other hand, this state-installed big sister of the Bush administration also gives a memorable bad report. [...] At the end of the film there is a rather shrewd moral: Those who conjure up the spirits of reason will not get rid of them so easily. "

- Michael Kohler, Frankfurter Rundschau
