action

The film consists of several storylines that are loosely linked. They add up to a story of greed for oil and the struggle for money and power. There are victims on all sides in this conflict, which is characterized by multiple corruption .

The CIA -Agent Bob Barnes loses one during an action in Iran Stinger - MANPADS , in the hands of terrorists falls. Elements of the weapon system are used to build a bomb that will be used to carry out a suicide attack on a tanker belonging to the Connex Killen group. Texas-based oil company Connex is one of the largest energy companies in the world. After losing oil production concessions in an unnamed Arab country to its Chinese rivals, the company is attempting to take over other oil fields in Kazakhstan . To this end , it is merging with another group, Killen , which owns oil production rights in Kazakhstan. Dean Whiting has hired the law firm to handle the merger.

Energy expert Bryan Woodman meets the emir of an unnamed state and becomes an advisor to the emir's son, Prince Nasir. He plans to carry out democratizing reforms in his country, but his father, the seriously ill emir, hands over power to his unscrupulous brother, who has the backing of the USA. Nasir wants to end US influence on his country and organizes a coup . With US interests in the state's oil reserves threatened, the CIA classifies Nasir as a terrorist to justify his killing. Agent Bob Barnes is assigned to arrange for Nasir's death in Beirut, but his helpers there turn against him and torture Barnes. Since they are also making the plan public, Washington worries that it might fall back on the CIA and political leadership, so Barnes will be scapegoated on his return. Bob Barnes investigates the details and realizes that while Nasir is not a friend of American interests, he is not a terrorist. When Barnes finally tries on his own to prevent his murder by an armed drone , he arrives too late and dies, together with Nasir and his family, when the rocket hits. Bryan Woodman, who was enthusiastic about Nasir's visions of the future, narrowly escapes the assassination attempt and returns to his family in shock.

Another storyline tells how two young Pakistanis are dismissed and humiliated as cheap oil workers in rich Saudi Arabia and, enticed by the convenience of a Koran school , get deeper and deeper into extremist circles. Finally, with the help of a fishing boat and the CIA missile, they carried out the suicide attack on the tanker.

Reviews

“Not a catchy film, but a highly gripping film, the complicated facts of which are only gradually becoming apparent; captivating thanks to the great actors and the outstanding direction. "

“Stephen Gaghan ( Oscar for the screenplay for ' Traffic - Power of the Cartel ') dissects US-American power politics precisely in this extremely complex political thriller, which is always about profit potentiation and not about enforcing democratic values. Using the example of personal fates, he skillfully describes the amalgamation of industry and politics using the example of the oil industry. Unfortunately, the whole thing has been squeezed into a cinematically not exactly high-quality corset. Nevertheless: the vivisection of unscrupulous power politics offers perfect entertainment that makes you think. "

"With a great cast of actors and an ingeniously constructed script, Traffic screenwriter Stephen Gaghan expands the opaque entanglements in the international oil business in his directorial debut, which are almost physically transferred to viewers who are struggling for orientation."
