Timothy S. "Tim" Squyres (born March 29, 1959 in Wenonah , Gloucester County , New Jersey ) is an American film editor .

Life

Timothy S. Squyres is the younger brother of the American professor of astronomy Steve Squyres . Both graduated from Gateway Regional High School and later graduated from Cornell University . Originally, Tim was also looking for a scientific career. It was only when he saw Robert Altman's films that he discovered his interest in film. He then went to New York University to originally study direction and camera . But he ended up in the editing and shuffled from one student film to the next until he ended up with independent film . After a few unpaid internships , he got lucky and ended up editing Anna - Exile in New York . This led to further sound cuts , until he ended up with film editing and in 1991 made his first independent cut with Blowback . He met Ang Lee through its director Ted Hope .

Since 1992 he has edited ten films for Lee with Pushing Hands , including Ride with the Devil , Sense and Sensibility and, most recently, Life of Pi: Shipwreck with Tiger . For Tiger and Dragon he received nominations and awards from various film awards in 2001, including an Oscar nomination for Best Editing and a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Editing . Squyres said about the collaboration with Ang Lee that both he grew up editing his films and Lee had grown up as an editor editing his films, and he's grown up as a director with me editing his films.) . However, Squyres also had problems in Lee's films, including Tiger and Dragon and Eat Drink Man Woman , with the editing of dialogue scenes. He doesn't speak Mandarin (One thing that makes it challenging is that I don't speak Mandarin.) And although he knows some Mandarin vocabulary, the grammar is absolutely alien to him (I do know a fair amount of Mandarin vocabulary, but I have no concept of Mandarin grammar at all.) .

With Gosford Park , Squyres was allowed to edit a film for Altman in 2001.

Squyres cut four films directly at home on his laptop, while he was working in consultation with the respective New York editing studio, so he cut not only Danger and Desire , Rachel's wedding but also Taking Woodstock in this way.

Tim Squyres is a member of the American Cinema Editors .
