action

On November 21, 1963 (the day before John F. Kennedy died), Eddie Birdlace and his friends came to San Francisco from the Navy . It should go to Vietnam in 24 hours .

In order to really celebrate together again before their departure, they organize a so-called "dogfight". At this party everyone tries to bring an ugly companion with them. The one with the ugliest company wins not only the reputation of his comrades, but also a lot of money.

Birdlace meets Rose in a café. He invites her to go to the party with him. Just before they go in, Birdlace changes his mind. He likes Rose so he doesn't want to expose her to the jury of the party. However, he cannot make it clear to Rose why he is suddenly no longer interested in the party, and so they both go inside. At the party, Rose finally learns the real purpose of the "dogfight" from another girl. Horrified, she runs to Birdlace and slaps him in the face in front of everyone. Then she leaves the party.

Birdlace is very sorry about this. To apologize, he throws pebbles at Rose's window. Rose opens the door and accepts his apology. The two experience a wonderful evening together and get closer. The next morning Birdlace goes to war.

Years later he returns to San Francisco alone. He lost all of his friends in the war and the world has changed. Birdlace goes in search of Rose. She has now taken over the café from her mother. When the two meet again in the café, they embrace each other.
