Holly Near (born June 6, 1949 in Ukiah , California ) is an American songwriter , singer , actress and teacher .

Life

After finishing school, Near became the singer of the American band Freedom Singers , who performed songs of American folk music. Near graduated from UCLA in California and participated in the university's theater program. Near took part in the Vietnam protests as a student and became a member of Another Mother for Peace .

Since 1969 she appeared on US television in various television productions. Her first television appearance was on the television show The Mod Squad . This was followed by appearances in the television series All in the Family and The Partridge Family . Near also appeared in the films Slaughterhouse-Five and Minnie and Moskowitz . In 1970 she played the role of Fran in The Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart . Near was briefly a member of the musical comedy troupe First National Nothing , which released the album If You Sit Real Still and Hold My Hand, You Will Hear Absolutely Nothing (Columbia Records - LP C 30006). Near also played in the Broadway musical Hair in 1970 . Together with her musical colleagues, she protested about the Kent State massacre . Near responded to this incident with her song It Could Have Been Me , which she released on her album in 1974. In 1971, Near took part in the FTA Tour , an anti-Vietnam War street tour organized by activist Fred Gardner and actors such as Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland . In the 1970 and 1980s, Near wrote and sang other songs, which she released in various albums.

Among other things, she sang in her musical career as a singer with musicians such as Ronnie Gilbert , Pete Seeger , Arlo Guthrie , Mercedes Sosa , Bernice Johnson Reagon , Bonnie Raitt , Jackson Browne , Meg Christian , Cris Williamson , Linda Tillery , Joan Baez , Phil Ochs , Harry Belafonte and other singers such as the Chilean group Inti-Illimani .

In the 1970s, Near lived with the musician Meg Christian for three years . Near wrote her autobiography in 1990, entitled Fire In The Rain, Singer In The Storm . She wrote the anthem We Are A Gentle, Angry People for the Unitarian Universalist Association .

Holly Near was nominated for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize as part of the 1000 Women Project .
