life and career

Donald Sutherland, from a family of Scottish descent and the son of worker Frederick McLea Sutherland, spent most of his childhood in the small town of Hampton, New Brunswick, and as a teenager in Nova Scotia . Sutherland worked as a disc jockey for a Canadian radio station while he was still in school . He was able to prove his acting talent for the first time at the age of fifteen when he played the role of Scrooge in the radio play A Christmas Carol based on Charles Dickens . At that time he was also active as a stand-up comedian .

He later studied at the University of Toronto and joined the drama group there. Through his appearance in Shakespeare's The Tempest , the theater critic Herbert Whitaker noticed him and suggested that he become a professional actor. Sutherland took the advice and went to London to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art . He made his debut early 60s in the play August for the People alongside Rex Harrison .

The producer Paul Maslansky discovered him on a theater tour of Great Britain in 1964 and signed him for the independent horror film The Castle of the Living Dead . Other film roles followed, including in the television series Simon Templar and Mit Schirm, Charme und Melone , he made occasional appearances. Sutherland used this a little later to get a role in the classic war film The Dirty Dozen . For this he showed the producers the episode Simon Templar on the run of the series Simon Templar, staged by Roger Moore , as a reference . After the film The Dirty Dozen , Sutherland made his final breakthrough in 1970 with Robert Altman's MASH .

At the time, Sutherland and Jane Fonda were vehemently against the Vietnam War . Noteworthy testimony is their joint film FTA - which stands for Free The Army (but this means Fuck The Army ) - which documents their agitation tour to US Army locations around the world.

In 1985 he appeared in the video clip for the single "Cloudbusting" (extraction from the album Hounds of Love ) by the British singer Kate Bush in the role of Wilhelm Reich , who invented the "Cloudbusting" for weather manipulation. Since the 1990s he can also be seen frequently in high-profile supporting roles, such as 1995 in Outbreak - Silent Killer on the side of Dustin Hoffman and Morgan Freeman . For his role in the 1995 series Citizen X , he received the Emmy Award for Outstanding Actor in a Supporting Role in a Miniseries or a Movie . This was followed by important supporting roles in films such as Die Jury , Instinct , Space Cowboys or The Hunger Games - The Hunger Games and its sequels.

Despite his cinema success, he has never given up his passion for the theater . More recently he has performed for Enigmatic Variations at the Savoy Theater in London .
