chronology
The Dreaming Hounds of Love The Whole Story

Hounds of Love (dt. Bloodhounds love ) is the fifth studio album by Kate Bush , which was published in September 1985. It is her most successful LP to date, as she reached number 1 on the British charts, number 2 on the German charts and the only one of her albums to reach the top 40 (number 33) in the USA . It is also rated by many critics as the interpreter's strongest album.

The first part of the album, the A side of the LP version, consists of poetic, elaborately arranged songs on the subject of self-discovery; the four released singles all come from the first part.

The B-side is titled The Ninth Wave and as a concept album tells the story of a woman who restlessly slips to sleep "counting sheep" and dreams of breaking into her ice skating. In the dream on the verge of death, she relives drastic experiences in her development as a woman. In the end there is redemption and rebirth.

useful information

  • In the piece Waking the Witch , a helicopter sample from Pink Floyd's The Wall album is used.
  • In the video clip for the single Cloudbusting , Donald Sutherland appears as the "rainmaker" Wilhelm Reich , while Kate plays his little son Peter, who brings his father's work to an end. The video was designed by Kate together with Terry Gilliam and directed by Julian Doyle.
  • The video clips for the four singles were released in 1986 as a VHS cassette under the title The Hair of the Hound (total running time: 20 minutes).
  • The title Running Up That Hill was originally called A Deal with God , but since this was to be released as the first single, it was renamed at the request of the record company, as radio stations in various countries do not play titles in whose name the word "God" occurs.
  • Werner Herzog , Robbie Coltrane and Terry Gilliam , among others , are mentioned in the album's acknowledgments .
  • The choir "Zinskaro", a Georgian folk song, in the song Hello Earth was originally adapted by Florian Fricke for Werner Herzog's film Nosferatu - Phantom of the Night .
  • The line It's in the trees! It's coming! at the beginning of the title song comes from the film The Curse of the Demon by Jacques Tourneur from 1957.

Cover versions

  • Running Up That Hill was covered by Placebo and Within Temptation , among others , which both made it into the charts in different countries.
  • The title track Hounds of Love was covered in 2005 by the British band The Futureheads ; the single reached number 8 on the UK charts.
  • The Utah Saints built their song "Something Good" from samples from "Cloudbusting". No. 4 UK charts 1992.
