The Sensual World is the sixth studio album by the English singer and composer Kate Bush . It was released in October 1989 with eleven titles. In England, the album reached second place on the album charts and was awarded platinum. In the US Billboard 200 album charts , it achieved the highest position 43 and gold status. In Germany, The Sensual World reached tenth place on the album charts.

production

The album was written and produced by Kate Bush. The Bulgarian band Trio Bulgarka sings on several tracks on the album and can also be heard on several tracks on the follow-up album The Red Shoes from 1993.

The title-giving first track on the album, The Sensual World , was written by Bush inspired by James Joyce 's novel Ulysses . She was referring in particular to the speech passage of a female protagonist in the book, which she wanted to quote at the end of the song. Bush had already recorded the voice recording in the studio, but ultimately received no permission for use from the writer's heirs. Bush replaced the passage with a new text that sounded vaguely similar. When Bush recorded the new title The Sensual World for her album Director's Cut , which was released in 2011, this time she was allowed to use Joyce's original lyrics. Bush implemented her original text idea accordingly and gave the piece a new name with Flower of the Mountain .

Later post-processing

Bush was not satisfied with the quality of the production after it appeared. She classified The Red Shoes with similar skepticism , with whose production sound she particularly quarreled. The criticism of the two works finally led Bush to re-arrange selected tracks from the albums in 2011, edit them and partly re-record them on the Director's Cut production for a second time.

reception

While Bush, in contrast to many fans, was not very convinced of The Sensual World , reviews were positive. One recurring review is that Bush's varied moods on the album would prove their musical exceptional position. It would be difficult to know which direction Bush would take next.
