Running Up That Hill is a song by the English singer-songwriter Kate Bush . It was the first single from their 1985 album Hounds of Love, as well as their first 12-inch single. It was released in the UK on August 5, 1985 . On the album, the full title of the song was Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God) . Bush wrote and produced the song himself.

Publication and reception

The single release was Kate Bush's most successful in the 1980s. She entered the UK charts at number 9 and finally reached the artist's second highest single peak at number 3. Bush also had her first hit with the song since 1978 in the United States. There she reached number 30 and was also high in the dance charts. Also in Germany the song reached # 3 in Austria number 21 and in Switzerland 10th place in the Netherlands and Belgium , the piece came respectively ranked sixth

Bush played the song for the first time live with David Gilmour of Pink Floyd at the Secret Policeman's Third Ball in 1987. It was used as the main theme for the BBC 1 -Kids-drama series Running Scared used (1986). The song with its distinctive drum pattern also served as the inspiration for Talk Talks hit Life's What You Make It .

The B-side of the 7-inch single features Bush's song Under the Ivy . The 12-inch single includes an extended remix and an instrumental version of Running Up That Hill and Under the Ivy . A limited 7-inch single gatefold edition has also been released.

The song was highly praised by the critics. In a retrospective review of the single, all- music journalist Amy Hanson wrote: "Always familiar with emotions and able to manipulate even the most bitter hearts, Bush has rarely written such a brutally true, painfully sensual song."
