Rossif Sutherland (born September 25, 1978 in Vancouver ) is a Canadian actor and the son of Donald Sutherland and Francine Racette .

Life

Rossif Sutherland was born on September 25, 1978 in Canada's second largest English-speaking city, Vancouver, to actors Donald Sutherland and Francine Racette . His parents have been married since the 1970s, and this is his father's third marriage. Sutherland has the biological siblings Roeg Sutherland (* 1974) and Angus Redford Sutherland (* 1982). In addition, Sutherland is the half-brother of Kiefer Sutherland , whose father is also Donald Sutherland.

His parents named him after the filmmaker Frédéric Rossif . His mother, who is Franco-Canadian, had her first lead role in Rossif's first feature film As Far as Love Can reach .

Rossif Sutherland lived with his mother in Paris between the ages of 7 and 19 , while his father has appeared in films around the world as an actor. Therefore, Sutherland speaks fluent French in addition to English , even though he was born in the English-speaking part of Canada .

Sutherland, who grew up a long way from Hollywood and originally had no ambitions to become an actor and thus follow in the footsteps of his famous father and half-brother Kiefer, describes his move into the film business as abrupt.

At the age of 19 he left France for the USA and enrolled at Princeton University in philosophy. In his second year there, a fellow student asked him if he would like to direct a short film that was supposed to represent her thesis because he was familiar with film sets. During the implementation of this project, in which he also appeared in front of the camera for the first time as an actor, he discovered completely different aspects of himself, and he was then encouraged by his father, to whom he showed the film, to continue this work. So Sutherland took acting lessons in New York from Harold Guskin , who had previously also taught Kevin Kline , Glenn Close and James Gandolfini .

2003 Sutherland took a smaller role as French archaeologist in the science fiction film Timeline of Richard Donner . In 2007 he got his first leading role in the Clement Virgos film Poor Boy's Game . In it he played an amateur boxer who became a criminal.

In the crook comedy High Life - Four gangsters and a surefire thing by Gary Yates in 2009, Sutherland played a shabby and slightly poorer petty criminal. The film was presented at the 2009 Berlinale , where it premiered in the Panorama section, and later received good reviews internationally. The film describes him and his gang as lovable losers who serve each other as 'stooges' (henchmen).

In the Canadian crime series King , Sutherland was seen as one of the main characters from 2011 for 13 episodes in the role of Detective Pen Martin. From 2013, Sutherland played in two seasons of the US historical series Reign in the lead role of Nostradamus, the advisor to Caterina de 'Medici . During this time he also played a French police officer at the side of his father in some episodes of the series Crossing Lines in the role of Detective Moreau. It is the first series in which his father not only stood in front of the camera as an actor, but also produced it.

In the 2015 film River , Sutherland played a doctor who - while trying to protect a young woman from rape - kills the son of an Australian senator and then tries to escape from Laos . The film received very good reviews, and Sutherland was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for starring in the film . Since 2016 Sutherland can be seen in the television series The Expanse in the role of Neville Bosch. This is again a science fiction production. The series takes place in the 23rd century, and humanity has colonized parts of the solar system in it.

In the film Edge of Winter , Sutherland plays alongside Shiloh Fernandez in the role of Luc, a hiker who has to flee from a snow storm.
