Kevin Delaney Kline (born October 24, 1947 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is an American actor and Oscar winner.

Life

The son of a Catholic mother and a Jewish father attended a Christian monastery school. At Indiana University he joined the theater company and had his first minor role in William Shakespeare's Macbeth .

In the early 1970s, Kline went to New York . He attended the Juilliard Acting Academy and toured the stage with the Acting Company .

His greatest theatrical successes include Three Sisters by Anton Chekhov , The Threepenny Opera and On The Twentieth Century by Hal Prince, for which he received the Tony and Drama Desk Awards . He was also awarded these prizes for The Pirates Of Penzance .

In the 1980s, Kline played the title roles in the Shakespeare plays Hamlet , Richard III at the New York Public Theater . and Heinrich V. For this he received the Shakespeare Prize in the Classical Theater category and two Obie Awards .

For his feature film debut in Sophie’s Decision , he was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Newcomer in 1982 . In the 1980s and 1990s, Kline made several films with director Lawrence Kasdan , including The Great Frustration , Silverado , I Love You To Death , Grand Canyon - In the Heart of the City and French Kiss .

In 1988 he starred alongside John Cleese , Michael Palin and Jamie Lee Curtis in the British cult comedy A Fish Called Wanda . For the portrayal of the pseudo-intellectual American Otto, he received an Oscar for best supporting actor. With this film he consolidated his image as a comedian.

However, his greatest passion remained the theater, which led to his turning down several prestigious role offers. Among other things, he was the cast of choice for the role of Matt Hooper in Jaws , which eventually played Richard Dreyfuss , and the title role in Batman , which was taken over by Michael Keaton .

Kevin Kline has been married to actress Phoebe Cates since 1989 , with whom he has two children.

On December 5, 2004, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . In 2009, the performance of Cyrano de Bergerac in the American program Great Performances earned him his first Emmy nomination.

Until his death, Arne Elsholtz was the longstanding German standard dubbing voice in most of his films.
