Chaplin (film)
Chaplin is a British-American-French-Italian biopic of Richard Attenborough from the year 1992 . The script is based on the book Chaplin: His Life and Art by David Robinson and the 1964 autobiography of Charlie Chaplin . The main role played Robert Downey junior .

The aged Charlie Chaplin lives in Switzerland and is working on his autobiography with his publisher George Hayden. Hayden becomes aware of inaccuracies and asks Chaplin to tell him exactly how his life went. The conversations between Chaplin and Hayden form the framework for chronologically narrated episodes from Chaplin's life.
Chaplin recounts how he first appeared on stage at the age of five when his mother's voice failed. He grew up in poor conditions in London with his mother and older brother Sydney . His father dies as a result of alcohol abuse . His brother gave him appearances in Fred Karnos Varieté , where he was successful. Chaplin later traveled to the United States, where he made a career in comedies under the direction of Mack Sennett . His appearances as "Tramp" are popular and he soon becomes self-employed as a director and leading actor. Chaplin will become a millionaire before he turns 30. Together with Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford , he founded the United Artists in 1919 .
His art is highly praised, but his political views put him at odds with the later FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover . Chaplin marries the teenage Mildred Harris , from whom he will soon be divorced. Since his ex-wife's lawyer wants the almost finished film The Kid to be confiscated as an asset, Chaplin secretly cuts it with his friends in a provincial town. When they are discovered, they flee from the police, which is shown in the convention of slapstick films.
More films, affairs and marriages follow, only the last of which with Oona O'Neill lasts longer. When he traveled to England in 1952, he was refused to return to the USA. Chaplin moved to Switzerland and was only allowed to return to the United States in 1972 to receive an honorary Oscar . In the last scene he prepares for the acceptance speech and watches excerpts from his old films that are shown to the guests.

The renouncement of strong emotionalization ensures a certain distance from the action, but this does not reduce the enjoyment of the loving and especially brilliantly interpreted homage in the main role. The film was nominated for an Academy Award in 1993 in three categories : Robert Downey Jr. for Best Actor , John Barry for Best Score , Stuart Craig and Chris A. Butler for Best Production Design . Robert Downey Jr., Geraldine Chaplin and John Barry were nominated for a Golden Globe in 1993.
Robert Downey junior won the BAFTA Award in 1993 . Nominees for this award were John Mollo and Ellen Mirojnick for the costumes, Wally Schneiderman, Jill Rockow and John Caglione Jr. for the make-up and Stuart Craig for the best production design.
Sven Nykvist was nominated for the British Society of Cinematographers Award in 1992. Robert Downey junior won the London Critics Circle Film Award in 1993 . Richard Attenborough was nominated for a prize at the Moscow International Film Festival and the Portuguese Festival Internacional de Cinema do Porto in 1993. Mike Fenton received a 1993 Casting Society of America Award nomination .
