Moscow International Film Festival
The Moscow International Film Festival ( IFF Moscow for short , Russian Моско́вский междунаро́дный кинофестива́ль ) is the only film festival in Russia that is classified as an A festival . It usually takes place at the end of June every year and has been accredited by the FIAPF film producers' association as an international film festival with competition since 1972 .
history
The Moscow Film Festival is only three years younger than the oldest film festival in the world, the Venice Film Festival . It was organized for the first time in 1935 on the initiative of then head of state Josef Stalin . The first jury president was the director Sergei Eisenstein . At that time, film prizes won, among others, Walt Disney and René Clair .
The second festival did not take place again until 1959. Since then it has been held every odd year until 1997, and then annually since 1999.
In 1989, the Golden St. George (from 2004 Golden George ) - the figure on the city arms of Moscow - was awarded as the main prize of the international competition. In the first few years of the award, the award mostly went to Western countries, but in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2018 it went to productions from Russia. A forum for young filmmakers has been held as part of the festival since 1997.
The Moscow International Film Festival is officially hosted by the Russian government . The festival president has been the film director Nikita Michalkow since 2000 . The aim of the festival is to promote cultural exchange between nations and to encourage filmmakers around the world to cooperate more internationally. The 2011 edition took place from June 23 to July 2, 2011 and, according to the organizers, was attended by 60,000 spectators. The jury president in 2011 was the American-British actress Geraldine Chaplin .
