The Shanghai International Film Festival ( Chinese  上海 国际 电影 节 , Pinyin Shànghǎi guójì diànyǐngjié ), also known as the Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), is one of the largest international film festivals in the world.

The festival was founded in 1993 in Shanghai . The first festival already had 300,000 spectators, including 200 journalists. 167 films from 33 countries were shown in the competition and in the panorama section. Not least because of the size of this program, the Shanghai International Film Festival was accredited in the same year by the film producers association FIAPF as a festival with international competition and is therefore one of the festivals in the A category . Formally, it is on a par with the major festivals in Cannes , Venice and Berlin , but is one of the smaller and relatively young events among the A festivals . It took place every other year until 2001, since then annually in June. In 2003 the festival was canceled due to the SARS pandemic .

The festival is divided into four main parts:

  • international competition with the “Golden Cup” ( 金 爵 獎  /  金 爵 奖 , jīn jué jiǎng , English Golden Goblet ) in several categories
  • international panorama
  • film academy seminar
  • international film market
