The four-part film War and Peace ( Russian Война и мир , Woina i mir ) was shot from 1965 to 1967 by the Soviet director Sergei Bondarchuk based on the historical novel War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy . The Soviet version has a total running time of 432 minutes (about seven hours). The premiere of the first part took place on March 14, 1966, the fourth and final part was premiered on November 4, 1967. In the GDR, War and Peace had 2,225,649 visitors.

Questionable calculation methods resulted in production costs of 100 million US dollars , which today (2015) would correspond to 700 million dollars adjusted for inflation. That would make the film the most expensive so far. These figures are incorrect because producers reported in August 1967 that the total cost was exactly 8,291,712 rubles, or $ 9,213,013 at the exchange rate at the time.

criticism

“Unlike Vidor's streamlined Hollywood version, Bondarchuk follows the epic narrative technique of the original almost verbatim and delivers a detailed counterpart to the wealth of material in the novel, impressed by the plasticity of the depiction of the milieu and the color of the time.”

"What is amazing about this film: (...) It remains tied to history, it shows history without any tendency."

- Stuttgarter Zeitung , December 4, 1968

“Although the manufacturers tried to reproduce the details true to detail, the work does not meet the demands of Tolstoy's original, neither in form nor in content. As a historical film with depth, however, it is recommended for ages 14 and up. "
