history

The category was called in 1955 foreign Best Film (Best Foreign film) introduced. At that time it was also possible to nominate English-language films from countries outside the United States, which is why the United Kingdom and Canada, among others, won awards. From 1957 to 1959 and from 1961 to 1969 the category was best foreign language film (Best Foreign Language Film) . In addition, it led from 1957 to 1959, 1961 and 1964 to 1969 the category Best Foreign Language Film in English (Best English-Language Foreign movies) a. qualification

The current regulations only allow for feature films (70 minutes or longer) with a share of at least 51 percent of non-English-language dialogue. The film must have been shown in the home country 14 months prior to the distribution between November 1st and December 31st in order to be considered (this does not apply to problems with local censorship). In addition, the film must have been shown in the greater Los Angeles area for at least a week (a regular release in the United States is not required) and be made available to the voting members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. In contrast to the Oscars, there is no upper limit for submissions per country.

The film can only be considered for one award, but in every further category, with the exception of those for the best film drama and the best comedy or musical , which are only reserved for largely English-language productions.
