Menahem Golan ( Hebrew מנחם גולן; * May 31, 1929 in Tiberias , League of Nations mandate for Palestine as Menahem Globus ; † August 8, 2014 in Jaffa , Israel ) was an Israeli director , film producer and screenwriter .

Live and act

Golan served in the Israeli War of Independence a . a. as a pilot and was discharged from the Israel Defense Forces in 1949/1950 . He then traveled to Italy, from there he came to London via Paris . There he received a scholarship to the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art . Golan began working as a stage director at the age of 22. He spent around three years in the UK. After returning to Israel, he began to stage adaptations, mainly of American plays.

A short time after his 30th birthday, he and his family moved to the United States of America. There he took up a degree in film and attended events at Columbia University and the City College of New York . In 1962/63 Golan contacted the director and producer Roger Corman and was ultimately involved in the production of his film Fast Cars and Affairs (The Young Racers) . This collaboration marked Golan's first stint in the film business.

In the same year, Golan shot El Dorado, his first own film, for which he also worked as a screenwriter. The film was made in Israel, where Golan had returned. The main role was played by Chaim Topol . This production also marks the beginning of the longstanding partnership with his cousin Yoram Globus . The two collaborated as producers on most of the Golan films that followed.

In 1965, Golan and Sallah - or: Swap Daughter for Apartment - first produce another director's film. It was directed by Ephraim Kishon and the film was nominated for an Oscar as the first Israeli production ever for best foreign film .

Legendary are the most popular was in Germany popsicles film franchise, the Golan in 1977 produced globe with his cousin Yoram and was established as a German-Israeli cooperation from issue. 3

In 1979, Golan and Globus took over the production company Cannon Films . Together they were among the most important independent film producers and made up to 40 films a year. During these years, for example, they produced the films by director J. Lee Thompson . The action films they supervised with Chuck Norris in the leading role also became known. Charles Bronson has appeared in 12 of the two films. Golan also directed several productions himself. In addition to action films, he also made the musical Star Rock ( The Apple ) in 1980 . In 1989 Golan and Globus went bankrupt with their company.

Menahem Golan, who occasionally called himself Joseph Goldman or Frank G. Carroll, also appeared from time to time in small roles as an actor.

He delivered a well-known directorial work in 1974 with the US feature film The Gangster Boss of New York with Tony Curtis in the leading role. His film Operation Thunderbolt about Operation Entebbe was nominated for an Oscar in 1978 in the category of Best Foreign Language Film . In 2002 he surprised the film world with an idiosyncratic adaptation of Dostoyevsky's Guilt and Atonement , which he set in Moscow at the turn of the millennium. His established image as a producer of trivial action films and comedies has so far prevented a broad reception in German-speaking countries.

In 2003 he worked as a director and screenwriter on the action drama Final Combat, which was shot in Bangkok . The following musicals, produced in Israel, Days of Love (Yamim Shel Ahava) and A Dangerous Dance (Rikud Mesukan) , on the other hand, tested new lows on the movie meter. In 2008 he set a previously little-noticed memorial to his deceased friend Ephraim Kishon with the comedy Marriage Agreement .

In 1984 (worst film for Hercules ), 1987 (worst film for Die City-Cobra ) and 1988 (worst film for Tough Men Don't Dance ) he and Yoram Globus were each nominated for the Golden Raspberry . In 1988 they were both nominated for the film Tough Men Don't Dance at the Independent Spirit Awards .
