She vigorously fends off all his attempts, which is why there are passionate arguments with arguments and outbreaks of violence.

Meanwhile, there is always a mostly wordless old man around who seems to live in a trailer on the premises, and who later turns out to be May's father.

Finally Martin arrives and May and Eddie spend the evening talking with him and partly with the old man. The viewer learns in the stories supplemented with flashbacks that the old man is Mays and Eddie's father who had led a double life in two families for many years. The half-siblings met without realizing that they are related and that their relationship is incest .

Suddenly "The Countess" returns, who had previously appeared wildly shooting before. This time, among other things, she shoots Eddie's car on fire, whereupon even more on the site catch fire. The film ends with May leaving the burning area.

Shepard is a strong portrayal, but Kim dominates the game Basinger the movie. " Ebert wrote that nothing prepared him for the dimensions that Basinger found in this role. Part of the credit goes to the director, who has done a “brilliant” job. Altman had already shown unfulfilled women in his earlier films who became aware of the waste of life.

The lexicon of international films wrote that the "clever and confident staging of the thin play by Sam Shepard" shows "stranded people who are the plaything of the action and cannot push forward to themselves" . The relationships of the characters would be "on the plays of Tennessee Williams " remember "its figures also the world as a junkyard of feelings experience" .
