action
America 1880: William F. Cody, famous as Buffalo Bill enters show business. He stages a Wild West show with many artists, actors and animals. The highlight of the show is said to be the retelling of the Battle of Little Bighorn , which took place four years before the show premiere. Cody, who himself did not take part in the battle, wants to erect a memorial to General George Armstrong Custer, who died at the time : Custer should be the real hero and also the victor. Sioux chief Sitting Bull , who took part in the battle as leader of the Indians, is also involved in the show. He puts the alleged exploits of Custer in the right light.
background
The film, which is set in Wyoming , was shot in the Canadian province of Alberta . In order to recreate Cody's open-air theater, a field had to be leveled with bulldozers.
More than 500 actors are named in the credits of the original version.
Reviews
For the film service , the film was “an ironic parody of show business that dismantles the myths of the Western and exposes the legend of the heroes of American history as a lie”. The film shows weaknesses through its "complicated dramaturgy and grueling lengths".
In its July 9, 1976 issue, Die Zeit reviewed:
“As in Nashville, Altman is using cynicism, intelligence and malice to dismantle the 'American dream' more thoroughly than any director before: The legendary wild west hero Buffalo Bill (Paul Newman), Mr. America in person, turns out to be hollow show business -Invention, his past as a hodgepodge of outrageous lies and cowardly self-deception. In return, Altman rehabilitates the 'real' Americans, the Indians, personified in the unusual figure of Sioux chief Sitting Bull. "
