Paul Lohmann (cameraman)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paul Fritz Lohmann (born February 5, 1926 in New York City , United States ; † December 10, 1995 in Los Angeles ) was an American cameraman, whose work is primarily associated with the central works of Robert Altman .

Live and act

Lohmann learned his craft from scratch, first as a camera assistant, later as a cameraman for short and documentary films and additional scenes. It wasn't until the beginning of the 1970s that the native New Yorker was able to get regular commissions for cinema films. In the middle of the same decade he had his breakthrough with his photography of the two Robert Altman productions Nashville and Buffalo Bill and the Indians, which were very well received by the critics . Between the two films, Paul Lohmann photographed the television production Eleanor and Franklin in 1975 (about the American presidential couple Roosevelt), which earned him a Primetime Emmy in 1976 . At the same time, Lohmann's achievements made Altman's colleague Mel Brooks sit up and take notice, who then hired the cameraman for the photography of his two comedies Silent Movie and Höhenkoller . Lohmann's excursions into adventure film and action, such as The White Buffalo with Charles Bronson and Meteor with Sean Connery , were far less convincing.

Despite great success with critics and audiences, Lohmann's career petered out at the end of the same decade. From the 1980s to the early 1990s, he almost exclusively photographed less important films, from the mid-1980s onwards only mainstream TV food. In 1992 Paul Lohmann, who occasionally received an "n" in the surname in the opening credits, withdrew to the senior part. Lohmann, who last lived in Avalon (California) , has a son of almost the same name, Paul J. Lohmann, who worked as a camera assistant.
