Avalon , or Avalon Bay , is an American city ​​on Santa Catalina Island in Los Angeles County , California . In addition to Avalon, the center of the population on Santa Catalina Island, there is also the small town of Two Harbors on the island. A total of around 3500 people live on the island, around 3100 of them in Avalon.

The older parts of town closer to the coast are dominated by small houses and two and three story buildings in various traditional architectural styles. There are also several large apartment complexes nestled in the hills away from the coast.

The town

Avalon is a rural waterfront town with the usual tourism-oriented businesses and services along the coast. In addition to the city itself, its historic Avalon Theater and Lichtspielhaus (now a cinema) and the impressive round ballroom located above it in the Art Deco building of the so-called Catalina Casino , completed in 1929 , as well as the one from there in the summer of 2016 to the new Ada Blanche Wrigley Carpenters Building on Metropole Avenue relocated Catalina Island Museum . Various walking trails in the hills surrounding the town, the Wrigley Memorial and a botanical garden just outside town in the hills to the southwest are other tourist attractions.

Traffic to the mainland

The city can be reached several times a day by fast passenger ferries from Newport Beach ( Catalina Flyer ), San Pedro , Long Beach , Marina del Rey , and Dana Point . Catalina Airport , also known as airport in the sky , is located in the center of the island and seven miles (eleven kilometers) northwest of Avalon. There are also several helicopter airlines that can be used to reach the island.

Small cars and Avalon Autoette

Avalon's main mode of transport is small gasoline-powered vehicles that are similar to golf carts and are known there under the name Avalon Autoette . In 1979 it was decided by city ordinance that one new vehicle can be registered for every two vehicles that are withdrawn from traffic. In 2001 the Catalina Islands had 1,300 golf carts and a remainder of 718 cars. Avalon visitors can use rental vehicles or public transportation.
