Bert Remsen

Herbert Birchell Remsen (born February 25, 1925 in Glen Cove , New York - † April 22, 1999 in Sherman Oaks , Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor and casting director.

Life

Herbert Birchell Remsen is the son of Helen Birchell and Winfred Herbert Remsen and the older brother of the actor Guy Remsen . During World War II , he served in the United States Navy and was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds he sustained while serving in Okinawa . After his service, he studied acting at Ithaca College and moved to New York City , where he also studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse . Remsen made his Broadway debut with the play The Rainmaker . After he made his debut as a film actor in the television series Suspense in 1952 , he made films such as Written With Blood , Kid Galahad - Hard Fists, Hot Love and Moon Whispers until 1964. Remsen had an accident while filming the television series No Time for Sergeants . when a crane fell on him and he broke his back, and then worked as a casting director for several years.

It was Robert Altman , who he worked for as casting director, who persuaded him to return to acting for his comedy Just Flying Is Better . Over the next several decades he made films such as Buffalo Bill and the Indians , A Place in the Heart and Fletcher's Visions , and has appeared in television series such as Charlie's Angels , Hart but Warm and Melrose Place .

Remsen married actress Katherine MacGregor in 1949 , from whom he divorced a short time later. On May 2, 1959, he married the casting director and actress Barbara Dodd , with whom he remained married until his death. Both had two daughters together, one of whom is the actress Kerry Remsen . He died in his home on April 22nd of natural causes and was survived by his brother, wife, two children, and two grandchildren.
