Charlie's Angels (OT: Charlie's Angels) is an American crime series from the 1970s and 1980s. In the United States, the series was broadcast from 1976 to 1981 and brought it to a total of 115 episodes in five seasons.

action

The three attractive Police Academy graduates Sabrina Duncan ( Kate Jackson ), Jill Munroe ( Farrah Fawcett ) and Kelly Garrett ( Jaclyn Smith ) are hired as private investigators by the Charles Townsend Agency in Los Angeles . They have never met their rich and mysterious boss Charlie , who they call his "angels", instead they receive their assignments from him over the loudspeaker. In solving their cases, the three angels get help from John Bosley ( David Doyle ), the head of the detective agency.

useful information

  • Charlie's voice was spoken by John Forsythe in the original English version .
  • Originally the concept was created for actress Kate Jackson . It was then decided, however, to put two colleagues at her side.
  • The success of the series was based not only on the originality of the scripts, which allowed the angels to act in ever new locations, but above all on the attractiveness of their three main actresses. Kate Jackson , Farrah Fawcett, and Jaclyn Smith were, in a way, defining the style of fashion and makeup of the late 1970s.
  • After only one season, Farrah Fawcett left the series, but had to commit to making several guest appearances in later episodes. She was replaced by Cheryl Ladd (Kris Munroe) . She played the younger sister of Jill. After Kate Jackson left, the third angel was played by Shelley Hack (Tiffany Welles) . But she also ended the role after one season and was replaced by Tanya Roberts (Julie Rogers) .
  • Only Jaclyn Smith stayed from the beginning to the end of the series and was the only one in the 2003 theatrical version 3 Angels for Charlie - Full Power to have a short guest appearance as a former angel.
  • Guest stars included Diana Muldaur , Kim Basinger , Tom Selleck , Tommy Lee Jones , Robert Loggia , Ida Lupino , Dean Martin , Horst Buchholz , Jamie Lee Curtis , Ray Milland , Jonathan Frakes , Audrey Landers , Timothy Dalton , Kim Cattrall , Dirk Benedict and Barbara Stanwyck with.
  • In 1988 an attempt was made to resume the series idea. This time, the recruiting of the leading actresses was to take place via the US-wide Angels '88 casting competition . However, the new edition did not make it onto television in the end. Of the four winners, only Téa Leoni was later successful in Hollywood.
  • The success of the original series was surpassed by the filming of the three angels for the big screen. The first movie 3 Angels for Charlie in 2000 with Cameron Diaz , Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu brought in such good box office results that in 2003 a sequel was followed up with 3 Angels for Charlie - Full Power .
  • At the 2006 Emmy Awards ceremony , the "original angels" Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith and Farrah Fawcett joined forces on stage to pay homage to the recently deceased Aaron Spelling .
  • In the English original, the title sequence contains a short introduction spoken by Charlie, in which he explains how he snatched the three angels away from their previous "exciting" tasks (such as filing files, working as a policewoman or in the switchboard, etc.) . In the German dubbing you can still hear the corresponding places where the music for the text passages is a little quieter. The text of the first season reads as follows: “Once upon a time, there were three little girls who went to the police academy… And they were each assigned very 'hazardous' duties… But I took them away from all that, and now they work for me. My name is Charlie. " In later seasons the text was adjusted a little to explain the background of each new angel.
  • Gig Young was originally hired for the role of Charles Townsend, but he was unable to meet his obligations due to his alcoholism. So he was replaced at the last moment by John Forsythe.
  • In March 2011, the production of a remake of the series began , in which Annie Ilonzeh , Minka Kelly , Rachael Taylor and Ramon Rodriguez played the leading roles. The series kicked off on September 22, 2011, exactly 35 years after the start of the original series, on ABC. However, due to declining ratings, production was stopped after only four episodes broadcast.
  • In October 2018, the production of the third remake of the series started as a feature film, in which Kristen Stewart , Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska play the three angels in the leading roles. The film was released in American cinemas on September 29, 2019, and Elizabeth Banks directed and played the role of Bosley .

Crossover

Between the airing of the pilot for the American television series Vegas and the first regular episode, Robert Urich completed a so-called “ crossover ” as Dan Tanna in an episode of the series set in Las Vegas. This fact was mainly due to the fact that Aaron Spelling was the producer of both series.

There was another crossover with the series Love Boat , also a production by Spelling. In the episode "Adventure in the Caribbean", the angels investigate the "Pacific Princess" on which the main suspect of an art theft is on a cruise. Guest stars were Gavin MacLeod , Lauren Tewes , Fred Grandy , Bernie Kopell and Ted Lange in their Love Boat roles.

DVD publications

The first three seasons are each available in full on DVD as box sets. The episodes of the first season - including cuts and German title sequences - correspond to the local television broadcast and are only available in German synchronization. The boxes of the second and third season also contain the English original sound and two episodes that were never broadcast in Germany and are therefore unsynchronized and only available with German subtitles.
