Gavin MacLeod (born Allan George See ; born February 28, 1931 in Mount Kisco , New York , † May 29, 2021 in Palm Desert , California ) was an American actor , who was mainly characterized by his leading roles in the series Mary Tyler Moore Show and Love Boat became known.

Life

Born in Mount Kisco under the name Allan George See, Gavin MacLeod grew up in Pleasantville , New York. His father died of cancer when he was 13 years old. After graduating from Ithaca College in 1952, he did his military service in the US Air Force . Then he moved to New York City . There he earned his living as an elevator operator in the Radio City Music Hall , where he met his future first wife, Rockette Joan Rootvik, in 1954 . During this time he took the stage name Gavin MacLeod; the first name comes from an infantile cerebral palsysick character from a TV movie, the last name of Beatrice MacLeod, an acting teacher at Ithaca College. In 1956 he starred successfully on Broadway in A Hatful of Rain , and work on the theater took him to Los Angeles, where he focused on film and television roles. He made his debut with a small role in the science fiction classic Alarm in Space .

In the 1960s, MacLeod played numerous supporting roles in film and television, often as a mysterious villain. From 1972 he embodied a completely opposite character compared to his previous roles. As the sarcastic but friendly news editor Murray Slaughter, he always made the right line in the fictional WMJ studio of the sitcom Mary Tyler Moore . From this time on he played the "nice guys" again and again, including between 1977 and 1987 in his most famous role as Captain Merrill Stubing in the series Love Boat . For his portrayal, Gavin MacLeod was nominated in 1979 for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Series - Comedy or Musical . After his captaincy at Love Boat , he also worked as a spokesman for the Princess Cruises group . He had two guest appearances as Uncle Stu on the sitcom King of Queens . He worked as an actor until the 2010s.

In 1954 Gavin MacLeod married Joan F. Rootvik, with whom he had four children. The couple divorced in 1972. Two years later he married the divorced actress Patti Steele, née Kendig, who subsequently appeared as Patti MacLeod. Due to his alcoholism, he divorced Patti MacLeod in 1982. Gavin MacLeod completely changed his life, wrote his biography Back on Course and remarried his second wife in 1985.
