Mary Tyler Moore (formerly: Oh Mary ; Original Title: The Mary Tyler Moore Show ) is an American sitcom directed by James L. Brooks and Allan Burns that aired on CBS from 1970 to 1977 . The focus of the series is Mary Richards ( Mary Tyler Moore ), who works as a producer (equivalent to the German boss on duty ) of the daily news program for the local television station WJM in Minneapolis , Minnesota .

In Germany , the first 110 episodes were broadcast on August 13, 1974 in the evening program of the first under the title Oh Mary . From October 13, 1998, RTL showed a new synchronization of the series under the title Mary Tyler Moore in the night program, and from March 29, 1999 the remaining 58 episodes were first broadcast in Germany.

Mary Tyler Moore was different from previous sitcoms in several ways:

  • It showed a different picture of women. Mary is an unmarried, working woman whose life is not centered around finding a husband. She's always dating (and having a sexual relationship with some of the corresponding men, also a first for sitcoms). She finds her “family” in the context of her work.
  • The series abandoned the 'plot driven' narrative style prevalent in sitcoms, within which the characters remained unchanged, and turned to a 'character driven' narrative style that allowed the characters to evolve and go through changes (for example in the form of Divorces or weddings).
  • Mary Tyler Moore was also the first sitcom to bring the characters' story to a close, here by firing all of the editorial staff (except for the news anchor Ted Baxter, who was portrayed as a useless fool throughout the show ) from the management of the station. The series ends with Mary turning off the lights in the news studio.
  • In addition to the two sitcoms All in the Family and M * A * S * H , the series is a new concept that revolutionized US television and in which the new trends in the population were taken up. While M * A * S * H dealt with the anti-war mood in the country and All in the Family with the new family image, Mary Tyler Moore showed a new image of women in which women confidently seek their place in society and no longer focus on the household and the family are set. So it is not surprising that Mary Richards never married - even if it was her intended goal at the beginning of the series -, had no children, but had extramarital relationships.
