Valerie Harper (born August 22, 1939 in Suffern , New York - † August 30, 2019 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actress who was best known for her roles in television sitcoms .

life and career

Harper was mainly from the year 1970 for her role as Rhoda Morgenstern in the CBS - sitcoms Mary Tyler Moore famous. As a Jewish window decorator Rhoda, she played the neighbor and friend of leading actress Mary Tyler Moore on the sitcom . The character played by Harper was very popular and got her own spin-off television series Rhoda in 1974 , which was produced until 1978. From 1986 to 1987, Harper played the role of the family mother Sandy Duncan in the first two seasons of The Hogan Clan , who then suffered a serial death. Originally, the sitcom was initially named after her first name Valerie , after leaving the series and the death of her character, it was renamed Valerie's Family and later The Hogan Family .

Harper has won four Emmys and a Golden Globe during her career . Since the mid-1950s she has been involved in 70 film and television productions. Before her big break on television in the 1970s, Haper had already been a dancer and worked on Broadway . In 2010 she was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of the aging diva Tallulah Bankhead in the play Looped . Harper was in front of the camera until the 2010s and most recently voiced guest characters in the animated series The Simpsons and American Dad .

Valerie Harper was married to actor and author Richard Schaal from 1964 to 1978. Since 1987 she was married to the actor Tony Cacciotti , with whom she has a daughter. Valerie Harper was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2013 , when her doctors predicted a life expectancy of just three months. On August 30, 2019, eight days after her 80th birthday, she died of cancer .
