Allan Burns

Allan Burns (born May 18, 1935 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American screenwriter and television producer . With James L. Brooks he was the creator of various sitcoms , such as The Munsters , Mary Tyler Moore and its spin-off Rhoda .

Life

Burns grew up in a Jewish family in Baltimore and studied at the University of Oregon . At the beginning he tried his hand at cartoon drawing. He started as a page at NBC and then tried his hand at drawing greetings cards. From there he got into television, where he initially worked as a draftsman for Rocky and Bullwinkle . Together with Chris Hayward he then came up with The Munsters . Next up was the sitcom He & She for which he received an Emmy . He became the lead author for Mini-Max .

He then began working on Room 222 with James L. Brooks . It was followed by Mary Tyler Moore and the spin-offs Rhoda and Lou Grant . He received a total of five Emmys for Mary Tyler Moore . In 1979 he wrote the screenplay for the film I Love You - Je t'aime , for which he received an Oscar nomination.
